See @JamDrop told you people were using "staycation" to describe going on holiday in the UK. As if going on holiday in the UK is some sort of novelty.

Yeah, I did think of you when I read this thread. Staying overnight somewhere is definitely a holiday.

There used to be a council poster and stickers saying ‘Barnsley centre of attraction ‘ with a map of Britain and an arrow pointing to Barnsley

I love the Scottish Highlands and the Loch Ness area in particular. In fact, we had our honeymoon there, as well as many other holidays. We drove up the A9 to Inverness. However, with regards to your particular holiday, I think going up the A82, alongside Loch Lomond, through Glencoe and onto Fort William would be my choice.
    Have a great holiday.

Cheers all, as ever the fount of all knowledge is here! So revised plan is over to Brid, up to Whitby and stay the night there. Then instead of following the coast to Edinburgh we'll head towards Darlington and pick up the A68 towards Otterburn and Kielder Forest on to Edinburgh and stay the night there.
Next day onto Stirling then Balloch and follow the A82 along Loch Lomond to Glencoe then Fort William, where we are booked to stay at the Moorings Hotel, right on Neptune's Staircase (Dragons photo above). Then the next morning we pick up the boat half an hour up the Loch and have a week between Fort William and Inverness.
So the 3 days getting there averages about 180miles / 4 hours driving each day which I'm happy with, not in any rush, want it as scenic and meandering as possible!
Coming back will prob be the straight boring route as back to work 48 hours after dropping the boat off. Prob M74/A1 either 8 hours straight or may stop over at Barnard Castle if me eyes need a rest :D

    Thanks again for the advice!
