Despite starting well in the opening quarter of an hour, we were playing second fiddle for the rest of the half against Blackburn. I was relieved to go in at half time at 0-0. A change in formation at the start of the second period got us back into the game, without causing Rovers too many problems at the back. However, it all changed when we brought on Styles Chaplin & Ludewig. Unlike on Saturday against Millwall when the substitutes made little impact, these three young lads altered the game completely. Ludewig started giving us width down the right, Chaplin started stretching Rovers' defence with his runs and Styles had the confidence to get on the ball, make positive runs and, for me, became the most effective player on the park. Our two goals were class finishes The number of times over decades I've seen Barnsley strikers having a clear run through on goal, only for them not to score (sometimes missing the target completely!) far outnumbers the occasions when they've scored. Brown's finish was clinical and, hopefully, will give a huge boost to his self confidence. Brereton was petulant and unprofessional, but I was a little surprised when he received a red rather than a yellow card. I thought Walton, Sollbauer and especially Mads were outstanding for us. However, Styles completely changed the game, for me. Well done, lads. We're not out of this yet, but we've got a realistic chance of avoiding relegation now.
Agree with that assessment and if Graham had been starting instead of Samuels imo we would have been two down . However having said that same could be said on some of our starters so evens Stevens on that . Defenders were outstanding there was one occasion where Sollbauer switched off but for a change we weren’t punished . The game changed when Chaplin , Styles and Ludewig came on . Fresh legs of Ludewig stretched them and the effervescent presence of Chaplin and Styles imposing his role and the tirelessness of Jacob Brown disrupted their dominance which our defenders had coped with admirably especially Mads . A deserved and hard won victory that has put us back among the pigeons and given us a realistic chance of safety .
I agree with all that, although don’t forget Styles came on for Palmer and Thomas came on with the other two. Brown bouncing the ball off Armstrong over our bar was a key moment as it turned out and it’s interesting Mowbray isn’t arguing the sending off, just saying Brereton’s behaviour was unacceptable.
