I hate racism too, I think most people do as a default position. I read Twitter and it is almost a certainty that a debate will be hijacked and derailed very quickly by people using terms like racist / fascist when anyone with a even a scintilla of intelligence can see that there is no racism or fascism in the debate. It happens so often that people who offer very interesting and valid opinions just think it's not worth engaging which I think is to the detriment of good debate.
I agree where there is genuine racism or fascism but where there isn't it starts to become a case of The boy who cried wolf. As I said to Marlon when genuine people with good and valid opinions don't bother to engage because of the accusations that follow we end in a position where nobody benefits.
That's fair enough, old mate. I respect you and your opinion. I honestly believe that racist, fascist, ignorance, intolerance & bigotry is a much, much bigger problem and issue.
Not really, they’re all the same tbh when people’s own political views are posted and highlighted . This is as bad as the next imho. The only exceptions I feel are hobby type forums that aren’t ruined with armchair politicians always trying to gain the higher moral ground. I’m in a few marine reefing forums and they stick to the subjects concerned which is a pleasant change lol.
Good for you mate. I bet you feel better for it too? After several years off facey, I now look back and question what I actually used to do on there, how generally it's a complete waste of time, and I try and consider any genuine benefit that it brought to my life. I can't think of one. People used to say 'dont you worry about losing connections', but I say not really because the important people in your life dont leave. And also we have whatsapp, phone calls, pubs to meet up in (obviously not right now), carrier pigeons etc.
On that I agree with you but what I don’t agree with you is that it’s only as one sided as you highlighted .
I agree but on occasions when posters put out the all lives matter on every post when posters point out there’s no organisation etc and the reasons it’s being used , you have to question their motives and if you believe they are just using it as an excuse to be racist there’s an excuse . People quick to point out things like anything they say is blasted as racists I say to them have a think about it . Yes there are some innocent but judging by some of the comments I’ve seen where for some reason they have to spell out how such a nice person they are and havnt a racist bone in their body then go on to post racist remarks then when someone challenges them go on to point at their pre racist rant and complain they’re being challenged for no reason . I’d say there’s more racists remarks than people calling someone racist needlessly imo .
Hear what you saying and I suspect in that instance that’s not so much trying to be clever but your passion for the subject at hand. What I see generally on this board the insults etc come over 3 subjects, Brexit, Tories & Rascism and if one person doesn’t agree with another some are quick to label others. Sometimes I’m sure it’s correct but it comes more often than not, not about the subject in hand but a retort to try to win. I only noticed it start over Brexit and seems to now becoming a regular instance and it detracts from the strengths of this board. It’s a real shame, I enjoy seeing some of the back and forth on here between posters and different opinions. I actually enjoy exchanging views myself and seeing others opinions on my views.
Yes I feel much better for it, I’ve just spent the last half an hour learning how the Boeing 747 carried the space shuttle across America on YouTube. I’d have definitely spent that half an hour on social media getting frustrated previously. The biggest lure for me was knowing everything and being the first to know it, ie, a sports news story breaking on Twitter but it’s just not that important when you think about it. I’ll find out about most stuff anyway through here or other apps like BBC sport, podcasts etc and if I don’t find out it’s not exactly going to affect my life much. Twitter in particular has become a toxic place which is really addictive, I’m glad to be off there.
You might be right Kev, I certainly agree that there is racism and fascism that surfaces on social media and it should be challenged - I would challenge it myself. What I'm saying is that challenging it when it isn't there, usually because somebody has a different opinion, is unhelpful and counterproductive. Having a different opinion no matter how much one disagrees doesn't necessarily mean that the person being challenged is either racist or fascist and often on social media that is the default accusation made. It really boils my blood.
The inappropriate accusations are one sided, that's the whole problem. Calling out racism, etc when it exists is absolutely the correct thing to do but this thread is about how social media reacts incorrectly to these issues.
But you don’t react to the racists . I get your point about some being called racists when they probably aren’t although I have no examples but you don’t call the racists out your post was one sided unless you’re saying there are no racist posts ?
I would if I saw something that I thought was racist so either I haven't seen it or I didn't think it was racist (context has to be considered, especially on social media).

So it’s acceptable to you that posters using All lives matter with all its implications and aspersions etc as a retort or skit ?

People don't follow each and every nuance as much as others. Me included. You can't blame us for that. If, as I have, one of my best mates of Chinese origin, where does all that leave him? All lives matter to me, and i'm not going to have anyone telling me that they don't.
I’ve seen this a lot on social media especially around the BML protests. Anybody criticising the violence or the non social distancing basically got told to her back in their box because of white privilege.
