What do you wish you'd been good at or had a talent for? Mine would be drawing. I watched a programme last night about Isambard Kingdom Brunel and it showed a picture of a horse he'd drawn aged 6 I wouldn't even be able to copy it as an adult!
I really wanted to be brilliant at art asa kid but I was no better than OK. I fixed that by taking up photography - a medium I have much more control over. I’ve dabbled with musical instruments and really wish I could pick up a guitar for a singalong at family events.
Before I was a teenager I could get a tune out of an accoustic guitar , small electric organ and piano . I could even read music to a decent extent . Wished I’d kept it up but sacrificed it for the usual playing/watching football and later chasing girls . Can’t even make a din on the instruments these days and as for reading music not a chance . They say you never forget but I beg to differ.
I always wanted to be a jockey as a kid. I used to watch Channel 4 racing round at my Granddads house on an afternoon and dreamt about being Pat Eddery, Willie Carson or Frankie Dettori riding all those winners. I took a stretch as a kid but always wish my parents had taken an interest in my obsession with Horse racing and tried to get me with a yard or something. I gamble now. Deep down though I love the sport.
Never played football after I left primary school. Always wanted to be a professional cricketer. But I wasn't good enough. Played in some good league cricket over the years though.
I always wanted to play the saxophone and love the sound it makes. Sadly I never attempted it, I may still do so one day.
Always ridden motorcycles from an early age and in the 90s did 9 years as motorcycle courier all over the country but the skill needed to ride at moto gp level amazes me every time I watch them try to get to 3 or 4 a year would love that skill
As a kid I was like a beanpole and my Dad was big mates with a local farmer who had contacts in the horse racing world. They sat me down to seriously discuss going to Malton to be an apprentice jockey, but whilst it was all being mulled over, over the next few months, I suddenly started to put weight on and grow in height. My preferred career would have been as a pro footballer, but apart from representing Doncaster Boys and playing at Yorkshire league level, sadly it never happened. Always remember walking off the field after having a good game in the Semi-Final of the Doncaster Sunday League Cup, when I was approached by a scout from Sheffield Wednesday who asked if I was up for a trial at Hillsborough. Told him my age (26) and it was never followed up, but after that game they took our 18 year old goalie on trial.
Excluding sport I'd have loved to be good at music - playing the piano ideally though guitar is a good second choice If I am allowed sport a cricket all rounder in the Botham/ Flintoff / Stokes mode
tried a few musical instruments a school , but never kept up with any of them. I wish I had kept with at least one.
I’d have loved to play the piano, my daughter plays and I had a few lessons when she took it up but I’m afraid I’ve all the finesse of Shrek and I sounded like I was playing using my elbows ;(
