    Yesterday Hancock quietly announced that the review of lockdown measures will be changed from every three weeks, to every four weeks, despite the fact that we’re emerging along the typical bell curve of a viral outbreak

    But hang on you might say - wasn’t the legislation they passed demanding of a review every three weeks, thus enshrining the requirement on law? Well, yes and no. Because the legislation was a statutory instrument, or secondary legislation, no votes are required to amend it.

    So let me just make that clear - they have vested in themselves the power to lock you up, to stop you having sex, to remove access to proper education for you children, to stop you seeing your parents, with no oversight from Parliament. Government by diktat. If you can’t see why that is terrifying and wrong then I can’t help you.

    On the same day as they disenfranchised roughly 1 in 3 of the UK population by removing the ability to vote remotely and thus preventing MPs that are shielding from taking part in the Parliamentary process?

    After lying to the Queen to prorogue Parliament last year? And the electorate for the last 4 years? Whoever would have thought that could happen.

    But all thats project fear - it will never happen because we have got our country back.

    I ought to be saying I told you so but I haven't in me, I am so angry at how dumb a large number of the British people are to vote this group of self interested charlatans in and give them total control.

    I don't see any way out either - the Tories have a huge majority due to our flawed system. Before the election they kicked out all the Tory MP's who werent prepared to act like sheep and do as they are told no matter how stupid.

    This is proved by the fact that "privately" many Tory MP's thought doing away with on line parliament and introducing a 6 furlong Conga line to vote was too stupid for words they dutifully voted for it because it was a whipped vote.

    For me the new project fear is that there will be compelling reasons to delay the next general election when we get closer to it and it will be delayed indefinitely. Someone convince me that's not likely to happen

    It's interesting that the regulations were made under the emergency procedure contained in section 45R of the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984. That would be the point at which the sponsors of the regulations would argue that the democratic process was honoured as the primary legislation, enacted by Parliament, gave the authorisation to the secretary of state to issue the current regulations in this type of situation. The three week/four week review is probably somewhat academic because even if three-weekly reviews were kept the SOS could presumably just roll on for another three weeks while privately considering the position every four weeks? In any event, the explanatory note to the current (2020) regulations states that the regulations are still subject to parliamentary approval every three weeks. I assume though that this is fulfilled by a written resolution which parliament would only debate if MP's objected to the 'rollover'. The regulations as a whole expire six months after they came into force, which will be on 26 September 2020. Of course if things are looking bleak then then the SOS could issue new regulations!

    I agree with Scoff above that the greater affront to democracy was the charade facilitated by Rees-Mogg yesterday, whereby large numbers of MP's (elderly, shielding, following government advice re transport, etc) were prevented from voting against their own disenfranchisement, effectively robbing their own constituents of a voice. It would probably have been impossible to defeat Rees-Mogg's motion anyway, but they have some nerve to be so arrogant as to not even try to honour democracy.

    Greece had track and trace from day one , saw a news piece on their state of the art tracking centre , incredible , but they have an app that works and had already been tried and tested

    The most worrying thing is that due to the populist and tribal nature of current politics, if it were to happen a lot of Tory supporters would happily go along with it as it benefits their "team". The fact that it fundamentally undermines democracy wouldn't come into it, in the same way there have been people on here defending Cummings or saying "just move on" notwithstanding the importance of the issue with regard to upholding the principles of accountability and the rule of law.

    The Enemy Within, is how I was described last year online when I dared to suggest leaving the EU wasn't for me.

    I understand why the racists wanted Brexit, I understand the racists and fascists supporting this government and what's happening in the US. But I can't understand why educated folk support any of it.

    Could one of our Tory/Brexit voters on this forum perhaps explain to me why they voted like they did, and what they think of the last six months? I'm genuinely intrigued to know. Happy to learn.

    Just IMHO but it matters not a lot to me that Cummings broke the rules, the important point is that the government were happy to destroy a hard won public health message to protect him.

    Hundreds if not thousands of deaths will be directly attributable to ‘if its good enough for them’.

    Apparently Johnski is "proud of their record".
    The only succesful thing theyve done during this pandemic is demonstrate how deadly herd immunity is. That's what I'm guessing he's proud of.
