Sadly what the Secret Barrister says is true. It is very sinister that the Executive of this country ( the government), thwarts our Independent Judiciary and Justice system constantly and has done for over 10 years.
If you follow any of the legal commentators the Legal system it totally f*cked - and was before the CV pandemic Ironic that this has all happened under the party of law and order - the one that has cut the police, cut the budget for courts but thinks that longer sentances will solve everything. As a side note its not so stupid to take the football season into account as pointed out in the twitter thread posted above its not only Barton that is affected - the defendant and all the witnesses are also involved in football
Would agree but if it’s a rule then surely. We could all avoid court by using similar excuses. To me there is absolutely no excuse. All my witnesses are unavailable cos they’re football coaches. WTF. More rights than a Juror.
The delay is over pessimistic. Surely both Barton and Stendel will be free to attend court by Christmas given the shelf life of the average manager and at least one of them is below average.
His own brother murdered someone due to the colour of their skin. Not saying he should be tarred with the same brush, but not sure i'd comment openly on the subject myself if my sibling had done that.
They don’t need to be ‘free’. They have to attend when the court says so. unfortunately there’s no space in court. As above the courts we’re suffering massive delays before Covid, now it’s a complete farce.
Didn't we accuse him of a racially aggravated assault? And Gabby Agbonlahor accuse him of making a racist comment to him too? Maybe he's not responsible for his brother but it does seem a shared trait in that disgusting family.
That’s what the court correspondent for the London Evening Standard says - the Secret Barrister responded. I’ve been following the Secret Barrister on Twitter for a few years (since the Twitter Joke Trial re Donny airport) and have no reason to suspect he’s wrong.
The headline makes it appear the delay is entirely due to fitting the trial around the football season. That isn't the case. The delay is due to the lack of court facilities for the number of trials we have pending. This has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Whatever the profession of the those involved, it wasn't taking place until spring next year at the earliest. But as the accused, the alleged victim and witnesses for both sides all work in an industry that has a month of down time in June, it really does make sense to arrange the trial then. If it makes anyone feel any better, by doing so Barton doesn't get to go on holiday.
Currently, no one has any idea when the 20/21 season will end. Given a late start, they might well still be playing in June.
