    What worries me is that several of our elected public school educated (as pointed out on here frequently) government voted incorrectly when there we probably only 2 choices...... How difficult is it FFS?

    That’s propaganda that is peddled by the selfish greedy farming lobby.
    And most of the British public is listening to it FFS.
    Anyone that has visited America knows that America is the world leader in litigation.
    Anyone selling dodgy stuff especially dodgy food would soon find themselves in court.

    But British farmers with the help mostly of the Conservative Party has maintained tariffs keeping imports out and food prices relatively high In this country and thus farmers relatively wealthy.

    If farmers paid the same taxes as other industries and farming was open to world markets then the farming industry would be operating at a loss.
    Wealthy farmers running around in £100,000 tractors while meanwhile there are food banks !!!

    I think with Brexit around the corner and the difficulties that we have seen with obtaining PPE when we don't seem to be able to manufacture our own, we need be able to feed ourselves using our farmers. Not rely on deals with a goon who not only thinks bleach is good for chickens, it's also good for us too.

    We don’t feed ourselves now.
    Less than 40% is home grown.
    Tariffs keep out cheap food.
    One of the main reasons for Brexit - is to stop the EU taxing you and giving that tax money to wealthy landowners / farmers.
    There are animal welfare and environmental issues to consider - but other than that all food tariffs should stop.
    Chlorinated chicken is a slogan - and the great British public has swallowed it.

    How can you sue a food provider if the food meets regulatory requirements, but the issue is that the regulatory requirements are too low?

    Exactly. The issue is that in the US, food has to be proven to be harmful to be removed from the market. Under EU law, it has to be proven to be safe first in order to be allowed to be sold.

    If I were a US farmer, and my farm was using some new steroid which made people ill, someone would need to bring a legal case proving it was that causing any effects they'd suffered before I had to do anything about it. In the EU, the steroid needs certifying before you can use it.

    What comes first, profit or safety?

    And that's the issue, we don't want our high standards of animal welfare threatened by opening the market to cheaper produce made possible by lower welfare standards.

    Chlorinated Chicken isn’t a slogan at all. 17% of all chicken produce in America is chlorinated. 1 in 6. It’s a significant amount of food in the food supply.

    In terms of Beef quality, there’s nine times more growth hormones in all US Beef on average when compared to any beef slaughtered for food in the EU. Now there is a question to say If this is dangerous to consume as Tofu has millions more Hormones in it than beef but there is no question that from a food quality perspective, a more organically reared animal will be far greater quality, in terms of taste and texture.

    One of my best mates is a cattle farmer by the way so the reason I know.

    And you talk **** about farmers being minted. They’ve actually been decimated over the last 20-30 years on the back of Supermarket pressure on pricing. It’s a known fact that the farming industry in the U.K. is already on its knees and if the government succumb to pressure from the US in any trade deal, the entire industry will collapse and be replaced with cheap mass market farms probably run by US mega farm corporates and we’ll be vastly reducing food quality for everyone.
