Trump's regime are pretty pro-business don't forget. I don't think the post above is correct but like the significant majority on here, I'm not close enough to the detail. I know it definitely isn't the case for the self-employed otherwise stress levels would be a lot lower!
Probably a 50/50 fight right now and more split than ever. Heading towards a 60/40 in favour of the Democrats but up until a coupe of months ago would have been 60/40 in favour of the Republicans.
I know people in the US that are getting $5,000 a month in unemployment for 3 months, while keeping their benefits from their employer. Just been informed that they are actually furloughed, not let go, but furloughed people are counted in the unemployment numbers over there and have to claim money through unemployment benefits. They have also received a $1,200 payment that went to every citizen. I know people that are self employed and unable to work, getting $900 a week. These people are treated as unemployed and their previous job doesn't matter, so that's not the reason for the payment amount. I'd be interested to see your article, however. I'm not saying it's wrong, perhaps I just know some of the lucky ones.
Correct on the $1,200 as a stimulus cheque. Strange one to me as every single person got one rather than an increased amount for those that need it, but it's seen as an economy boost, and we know the US is a very different country to the UK with a different outlook on business/finance. I think it was an additional $600 for each child in the household too. The self-employed 'unemployment allowance' is anything from $450 to over $1,000 a week depending on circumstances. Self-employed can also apply for business loans, even if you're just a one person business, to the tune of $10k.
The $1,200 followed the same logic as UBI, in that the cost of putting a system in place for means testing was more than just giving the same to all
Googled that a few times now - most people now see it as being the right decision at the time. We've lost far more selling off national industries at cut down prices
Furloughed are being classed as unemployed. At least that's my understanding. The weekly payments being given out are called 'Unemployment' payments, for example.
I'd have thought under a Republican govt they would want low unemployment benefit to force people into low paid work. Particularly as Trump isnt enforcing a lock down, quite the opposite in fact.
Well the governors are responsible for their own lockdowns, which is why some states have opened such as Georgia (with a continued reduction in Covid-19 cases from the chart I saw) and some are still in full lockdown such as California and Oregon until the end of May at the earliest.
I appreciate that but Trump was definitely trying to coerce Governors of all states into lifting it. As I understand it the population of Georgia is more spread out?
They're having riots over lock down in the U.S. They don't realise the dangers over there. Different extreme breed over there but it's creeping in over here too.
Ignoring the ones protesting, which in the grand scheme of things is a tiny, tiny minority getting way too much airtime, it isn't an extreme breed really. People forget how different the US is in terms of the UK and there's a significant amount of normal people, with different political views, that feel the lockdown and closure of business is too extreme. What we've announced this week they've been asking for. They haven't been asking for everything to go back to normal. That isn't an alien view, even in this country.
The more militant states and Trump supporters are in the South. The governors will eventually buckle.
