I would love to know about his life before he broke into the Nottingham forest team, what's his background. Watching the recent documentaries about racism in football ,how did his family feel and cope. Why did he drop out of football, he seemed quite young when he did. As a player he was majestic to watch,so different from what had been before.
He's still looking good. Maybe wasn't a great manager for us, although I have much fonder memories of him than most. But what a fk*cing player!
That hour absolutely flew by. The questions were great, but Viv Anderson was up for it and wanted to talk. Well done Loko.
Thank you so much Loko. That was fantastic. Viv has been a hero of mine all my life. This beautiful, elegant man, playing football like a God, helping to take a provincial northern town to the top of world football, when we were surrounded by racism, he made such an impression on me when I was a young kid. Watching those European games was amazing. And then I got to see him play for my team, and he was still bloody good you know. He doesn't get mentioned much in our all time best centre halves, we've had a lot of them, but he was right up there. And then this interview, and he's such a nice bloke. I really enjoyed that, thank you.
We said the same, I think he talked quick. Another great interview Ben, with another very engaging interviewee!
Another brilliant hour that just flew by. A humble man who was grateful for all that football offered him. Letting the team have at least 3 pints the night before the Bromsgrove game now explains the abysmal showing that day. Thanks for setting these interviews up @Loko the Tyke they're real eye openers. One thing I've heard in just about all of these interviews is the high regard they had for Eric Winstanley. What happened to big Eric? I'd love for you to interview him.
Eric's son is a regular contributor to this site. One of the mainstays that has been here for years, who you'll definitely know. Proper good bloke who I consider a friend, but I'll let him introduce himself and talk about his dad if he wants to. Just wanted to say that from what I know Eric is getting old but is still good and still around BFC.
Thanks for that Jay. Eric was one of my heroes when I was a kid. Him and Pat Howard were a formidable pairing. He was great from corners- once saw him score all three in a 3-0 win against Watford. All of the interviews I've seen so far have mentioned Eric with great affection. We had some great junior sides under his leadership as well. Just wondered when and how he left the coaching staff. Glad he's still doing OK. Hes a legend.
I was more than a bit mesmerised off camera listening to him talk about beating Malmo, Ajax, Hamburg, and that famous Liverpool team. All under a manager called Brian Clough. Surreal. I'm glad you've described his career as you have above, because I think some people forget just how good and classy a player he was.
Spackman wanted him out.. Dennis reluctantly agreed, wanting to back the manager he appointed. A decision that still haunts him and one that he'll never resolve.
I'd a feeling Spackman might be involved. I knew Eric was there in the Bassett era and then lost track of his career after that. He had a lot to answer for Spackman. Wasted pots of money on old players looking for one last pay day and kicks out one of the greatest coaches and believers in youth that we ever had. As you say, I bet that decision still haunts John Dennis.
Took over as Technical director of St Kitts and Nevis and was instrumental in improving their squad and fifa ranking. He was there between 2001 and 2004 and got them to their highest ever ranking of 109 at the time and laid the foundations for years to come
