Morning all .....Not been able to find anything online but does anyone have any video of Ronnie Glavin coming on as sub against Wednesday back in 1983 ......And scoring the winner?
Never seen any video of that game but I remember it well, standing behind the goal dodging coins thrown from above....
Unfortunately no. I'm constantly looking for all footage and this game is near the top but I think the best we can hope for is possibly amateur footage (yep even back then) I will however promise to post it on here if I ever do find any.
I can see it in my minds eye ,Ronnie had been put through running to side of goal ,arms out to balance himself, please score ,please ,everything went in slow motion, then a voice in my head went it’s super Ronnie Glavin,of course he will fecking score, next thing just noise and joy and arms and legs and faces I didn’t know smiling and shouting with happiness and I had a feeling,a natural high money can’t buy ,I could cry now just thinking back ,It was in the back of the net Youuuuuuuuu Redddddds
I don't recall ever seeing a re run of the goal on any local tv show at the time. The one thing I DO recall when Ronnie started warming up was a nervous murmuring from the Wednesday fans (along with the Wednesday players also noticing him, as already stated). They were right to be nervous! Ronnie was magic, showing why he was such a match winner for us.
Remember it well stood on the raised up corner (now unused) bit of the Leppings Lane away end. Wednesday were bricking it when they saw him warming up. Think he was returning from a lengthy lay off at the time. Soon after came the inevitable winner from Ronnie and manic celebrations in the away end. Happy days, just a shame there’s no footage anywhere....
They loved him those Wednesday fans, didn’t they? Remember during the 2-2 draw at Swillsboro November 81 chants from the kop “Ronnie Glavin’s a fat ba$tard, a fat ba$tard”. Then he popped up with a brilliant late equaliser which silenced them. Not bad for a fat ba$tard.
A further thought about the ‘83 game in the original post. Told to my old man by the late, great Rimmo. Just before he came on, Ronnie said to those on the bench “I’ll get a goal”. And he did!
