I’ve been for a blood test today at Manchester Royal Infirmary in preparation for a routine thing I have every six weeks.

The ward where I take it is specifically for giving patients immunosuppressant and other drugs for chronic conditions. My blood test today was administered by a nurse with no mask (she had latex gloves on, but that’s always been standard practise). The desks are set up such that the nurses are well under 2m from each other at their workstation. At one point a consultant did the rounds of the ward, at close quarters with their junior doctors.

One of the cafes in the hospital is still open. On one of the tables, there were four NHS cleaners all sitting together eating their lunches.

At the other end of the spectrum, I’ve got home and the missus tells me that at the park at the end of our street, the tennis courts where she normally takes the kids to do their state-allowed one instance of exercise per week, has been padlocked and closed by the council.

    It’s good this.

You should bring it up with the hospital.

It’s got nothing to do with the council who have rightly locked your local amenities.

I agree the two are unrelated, but I fail to see how continuing to reduce the space available for state-allowed exercise does anything other than hinder social distancing measures.

Not so sure mate. You’ve also got to remember that these amenities need to be managed by someone and they might be unable to continue to do it.

Next thing is social distancing is just one of many things that help to flatten the curve.

Touching objects will spread this far more quickly than being 1.3 meters away from someone.

The virus stays alive on metal for 2-4 days. It’s why I can’t for the life of me understand when watching day time TV they think by standing 2 yards away they are safe whilst cooking a meal in their fake kitchen.

Lots of people will be picking things up from stage hands and assistants to the presenters themselves. That’s far more dangerous than anyone being 2 foot away from you.

I hear what you're saying. All ward staff at BDGH were wearing masks yesterday (not sure about day outpatient staff). General hospitals have pretty much been turned into 2 areas: dirty and clean.
Everything and all associated with corona has dirty nursing: all other areas have clean nursing which means there's a 'barrier" between the two to stop contamination. I understand how you feel though. One can be rigidly following the recommendatiins while others appear to completely flout it.

That is better than nothing of course, but there's every chance a nurse can get infected outside of work or someone else such as the OP could unwittingly bring it in.

The evidence suggests masks have little impact on the spread anyway, though. I believe PPE will have been prioritised as well given the shortage.

Exactly.... that's why we need the majority of the population to lock down. People have to attend hospitals for necessary appointments and the people who work there have to come and go from home too.

Hospitals are not getting the PPE they require, hence there's no PPE available, hence PPE cannot be used.

Also it's one instance of exercise a day, not a week. It's also a run, walk or cycle. Not sure which of those requires a tennis court.

Length of virus survival time on surfaces depends on the material. Copper is under 2 hours. Cardboard and paper is nearer 24 hours, with stainless steel and plastic longer still.

I have heard that Copper Oxide kills it very quickly.

Can you explain to me how closing it helps to prevent the spread of virus? Thanks.

If it is gated etc then that's going to be somewhere open to contamination. Probably more likely to get it from a shopping trolley though.

    I never said it did?

Other than additional surfaces that will be touched by kids and their grubby paws, bringing all sorts back into households, I don't know why it was closed. I was merely pointing out that Tennis is not one of the recommended exercise activities.

There's no limit to the amount of times you can go out and exercise, or how you get there (drive if you wish*). They are however asking for people to use common sense and not take the p!ss.

*Indeed driving to somewhere for a walk, providing that place is relatively quiet, can be statistically safer than walking the same route where you might come into contact with people.
