...Can I just say having seen articles about the work being done to convert the EXCEL centre in London highlights what can be done. As Brits we all have a tendency to be pretty negative about ourselves but it is in a real crisis, that organisational skills come to the fore.
We all talk about the NHS and its front line workers dedication and ability but those pictures of civvies and Army officers working together discussing planning and progress and seeing the soldiers (looked like they may be Ghurkas in the photo) working along side contractors and the rate of progress was inspiring. It makes perfect sense to involve the army not just because they have surplus manpower but logistics and planning are one of their main areas of expertise.
Whatever anyone says, stating from scratch only several days ago, and it has been stated that it will be up and running before the end of the week. it is a considerable achievement. Further 'field' hospitals are being planned for other major conurbations like Manchester region.
Considering the situation, I know everyone on the sidelines likes to point out the things that could/should have been done by politicians, medical and science experts, but when you see things like this it makes you realise the enormity of the problems we face and actually, the speed at which decisions have been made and things put into place, has been exceptional.
Also a big shout for those who answered the call for volunteers i.e. ex doctors and nurses, retired police, and the aircrews who are (hopefully temporarily) without work.
I appreciate some people (notably one or two posters on here) have serious financial difficulties and seem to have been left short regarding the financial help packages announced. One can only hope that after the initial rush to address the majority, the Govt/Chancellor will find time to 'tweak' the finances to urgently assist those who have missed out.
It is cheering to find whilst there are always a few 'scumbags' who exploit the situations like these at all levels of society or basically only think of themselves. the overwhelming majority of people show their true worth. This is the case in both the UK and here in Italy.

Yes I saw that. As an avid follower of F1 I am aware that some of the brightest engineers and designers on the planet work in what is regarded as the pinnacle of motor sport. These are transferable skills that are clearly being put to good use to benefit everyone.

Thanks for the link - I had seen the story on the BBC that the breathing aid had been developed but it was lacking in detail and it didn't mention the ULC and Mercedes contributions - sounds like it is a brilliant solution and amazing it can be done so quickly - if it halves the numbers needing ventilation that's a huge win.
