Should it then be up to the British government to pay huge sums to get them home potentially bringing something with them?

If it's their fault then in theory no but if it's due to flights being cancelled then it's a different matter.

I think it was a bit reckless to not be coming home before then but really I mean those who went much later. There were people flying out 2 weeks ago when it was all over the news. Those people were just idiots

If airline flew them out on a return ticket it would be airlines responsibility imo . They issued passenger with return ticket .

That's true but come on we all have a bit of responsibility for our own actions don't we and a brain in our head.

They should have a duty of getting them back , if they’ve issued tickets with a promise of return then it’s their responsibility .

They're quoting 'act of god', not offering alternative flights and not reimbursing

They are doing. My cousin who lives in Australia travelled to the UK before all this went stratospheric. He was going to watch a few Barnsley matches, then on the return trip stop off in Vietnam to watch the Grand Prix. Everything was cancelled including the flight home. He may get refunded for the Grand Prix ticket but that's it. Getting another flight was a nightmare. He was on the last QANTAS flight after which they laid everyone off. It was the first and only direct flight there has ever been from Heathrow to Darwin. And cost him thousands

Think you're being a bit harsh mate, things did escalate very quickly when you compare it to how it is now and its a tough decision when hundreds/thousands of quid is at stake.

Think the anger should be directed at the FCO and airlines for not nipping some of it in the bud sooner. Flying people into Spain when they were on lockdown that weekend was an utter disgrace.

Seems like airlines were pocketing as much money as possible , they’ve had one eye on this for months but never once have they voiced any concern or warned passengers on booking .

That's easy to say when you're sat at home doing f-all. Not so easy when you've made plans with friends or family, potentially spending thousands of pounds, and the then current advice of the British government is that it's OK to travel.

Yeah but they could have at leas warned him or voiced a concern before he flew .
I don’t believe the airlines just shut down like that I think they’ve had it in their thoughts that it might happen for a few weeks and should have at the very least voiced a concern to passengers that they may not get them home .

Like any industry such as pubs etc they will listen to government advice and try and protect their interests, I realise that isn't morally the right thing to do though. I don't think the travel side of things was dealt with correctly, especially the flights to Spain.
