Once this has all blown over, will the world be a better place? Of course, many thousands of innocent people will fall victim, from which there are no positives. But in the midst of all the doom and gloom, surely there must be positives for when this is all over. I’ll offer a few of my thoughts; * Community spirit seems to be back. Been sat in front garden today and folk who would normally walk straight past now want to stop and talk. Maybe we could have 1977 style Silver Jubilee street parties once lockdown is declared over. * Even if, like me, you have been stood down from work and are relying on Boris’ 80% salary pledge, you can’t go to the pub, eat out, book a holiday, buy clothes and luxuries... we could all come out of this with healthier bank balances despite lower incomes. * Chances of getting your house burgled will be vastly reduced as everyone is at home (maybe the criminals will target locked down businesses, mind) * Will our community of heroin and cocaine users be reduced as how will this stuff reach the streets, now, from Colombia, Afghanistan etc.. * Our houses will be spotless and gardens immaculate as boredom kicks in and gets you motivated to do such tasks. * We may all be fitter as a result of eating healthier and learning to enjoy exercise like walking and cycling. * We may all grow to hate our wives/husbands and come out the other end free and single... Anyway, the above may be a complete load of rubbish but I just like to read positive stuff when all the news is gloomy and there is no football to entertain us. Feel free to add to the list and cheer us all up a bit...
More working from home. Maybe councils will ban traffic at least one day a week from city centres. The air quality is so much better. NHS will hopefully get the money (and thus staff and equipment) it deserves Low paid workers carrying out low skilled but invaluable work will get the pay, recognition and workers rights they deserve Political stuff I won't mention. We recognise self sacrifice, kindness and goodness of the vast majority of humanity We recognise that hoarding money by the billions is significantly worse than hoarding two dozen toilet rolls.
Well, if he snuffs it, that would normally amount to a free day off work. But as of today, I have 21 free days off work so neither here nor theer...
Agree wholeheartedly on your third point WOTS. No school run, less cars going into town, folks with cars at home, no aircraft flying into Leeds/ Bradford ( we are on the flight path), my wife and I have both commented how sweet the air smells and its hopefully doing its bit in the fight against global warming.
Dog walking round the fields at the moment is an absolute delight. This lovely weather is bringing out all the skylarks and so many cheeky singing robins. Bizarre how bad can bring out good.
I could smell the flowers as I walked past the town hall gardens today due to the lack of stinkin' traffick⚘
I really hope lessons are learned in this country about what is important in life. As a self employed person & someone whose business will not be the same after this, this is not an arbitrary comment, but it is how I feel, I'd be happy being a bit worse off & being in a country that felt more friendly, neighbourly & got the basics in life right.
If I look out from my flat all I can see is houses of multiple occupancy. Inhabited exclusively by young men estranged from their families with no way home. They've been brought here by unscrupulous employment agencies, are employed by unscrupulous companies and are housed by unscrupulous landlords. Many are here without papers, the majority on zero hour contracts. Within the next week, when they are made unemployed, they will be without food or money. They will have no entitlement to any government handout. I don't know what is going to happen to society as a whole, but this particular side show is inevitable.
Must be the cleanest for nearly two hundred years with the industrial revolution and petrol pollution surely
Thanks Jay. Unpleasant and hard hitting, though I am struggling to shoehorn this into a list of positives.
Yes, it really makes you think how life could be different. It is weird this is all coming to pass under Boris Johnson, but it is. No political points meant.
No please don’t make out all the positives are his doing lol. But yeah you’re right if we get used to clean air we might Not want to go back . Hopefully the govts of rain forests will now leave them alone with their diseases well and truly locked away and that could also lead to fresher air .
Maybe we will all just be more grateful for the freedoms we have and realise how much the simple things in life mean to us and appreciate them more, and therefore we won’t just clamour for the next new thing or the latest gadget.
Exactly. Perspective is needed. Health & wellbeing number one, we need to get the youngsters back to having an education too, although they will be learning things our recent generations have not. I'm gutted this has happened for personal reasons, but it has. We need to be positive & communal & when this time ends we need to have learned something.
Add human life to that list as well . There’ll be less traffic related accidents although even one is more than enough .
