What the Government really needs to do (actually all world governments) is shut down social media. It is almost totally responsible for the panic buying that will leave some of the poorest without. It gives people the opportunity to post things like this thread which will make people even worse, and at this time social media, I think, isn't essential or necessary (yes including this board). Shut them all down - the advantages outweigh the consequences.

can’t agree with that, the news alone is enough to spark the panic buying mentality in those that have it.
Social media can actually be an asset for folk needing help

If you shut down social media there is going to be a lot of very lonely people when we do go to lockdown.

Supposed to pick my puppy up Saturday, may have to make alternate plans to go get her before if I can.

Folk were panic buying petrol in 2000 during the fuel protests long before social media existed. Social media isn't to blame, it's people being dickheads

And it was a rumour that’s now been denied by the government! Matt Hancock definitely said in the coming days. He didn’t say exactly when. So all this lockdown talk for this weekend has been total ********

We aren’t Italy, also a fact! Fed up of news stories from countries not bearing our National make-up tbh. It’s well known Italy has a larger proportion of older people than us for starters. People live in different ways in different countries. Bloody media scaremongering. Folk want to stop watching the news and social media so much in this country I reckon.

Well said. Plenty of articles online giving ideas as to why Italy is suffering so much. Reasons like ageing population, how many live there for a small country so you've less personal space, how affectionate they are such as the double kiss and apparently 1 in 4 adults there smoke.

The over-70 thing from this weekend isn't ********. The 21st has been mentioned by plenty of news sources.

To be fair I and someone else asked him how lockdowns were being handled there, being the only person I'm aware of under one at the moment. Was just out of curiousity that's all.

Yes I was curious too, I don't think anyone knows the best approach and probably won't until at least a year from now. I was interested to hear it.

They've also got twice as many ICU beds as the UK per head of population, and Lombardy is one of the richest regions of Europe.

Some of what you say is valid and our media are very definitely a problem but and its really important you have to recognise Covid-19 is a huge issue.
We cant carry on as if its just a bit of flu and ignore it unfortunately, and there have to be measures in place to manage it until we have either an effective treatment or vaccine - It will kill many thousands of people in this country possibly many hundreds of thousands and so we need to take it very seriously and manage it as best we can.

If you read it carefully it says; "Shielding has not yet come into effect however, during his first coronavirus updated on Monday, the prime minister indicated that people with the most significant health conditions would need to be shielded from contact for 12 weeks, starting from this weekend (commencing 21 March)." Not healthy over 70s like myself,. but people with significant health conditions which would include all age groups

My understanding is that those measures will apply to all those 'at significant risk'.

This includes all those 70+ and all those with significant health conditions. But we will have to wait and see what is announced.
