Ok, I have a question. We have a week booked in the Lake District in a few weeks time. It is self catering in a flat. From leaving Barnsley to arriving in the flat the only contact we are likely make is with the agent when picking up the keys. Unless there has beena significant improvement in the situation we won't be visiting pubs or restaurants. We will probably take provisions or purchase from the supermarket there. During the day we will walk to the car, drive to the starting point of the walk, walk for a few hours and then return to the flat to cook and a few drinks. Repeat for the rest of the week and then go home. The question is should we be allowed to do this based on the fact that this is probably an unnecessary journey ? BTW this is not meant to be taken seriously as if we have to cancel we'll get over it
It sounds like you are keeping contact down to a minimum. Only problem could be if they bring in strict travel lockdowns like in Italy. Ps I suppose there is a chance you could unwittingly bring Covid-19 to an area that might otherwise not have had it. Pps I would not be surprised at all if at some point all motorways are restricted to emergency services and hauliers only.
Is there an increased risk of accident while walking in the Lake District? If you did have an accident, would there be an increased risk of not getting timely treatment?
Taking a serious view - a lot of people are going to suffer other health problems if they stay cooped up inside their homes for an extended period Walking outdoors is probably the safest exercise both for your physical and mental health - no reason to come within 6 feet of anyone else unless passing on a narrow path. The only slight risk is whether the virus can linger in the cottage and be picked up by the next visitors - I dont know if thats a realistic concern or not. I think I would risk it unless we implement travel bans - if we do like in parts of Europe and forbid travel except for essentials then you cant go
I suppose doing anything even slightly dangerous (walking in the mountains) could potentially add to the burden on the NHS, but then again most accidents happen in the home.... which would effectively rule out doing any DIY (hurray!).
I'd go if I was healthy at the time It's no more of a risk to you or others than having a walk on the Trans Pennine trail. It's just like being at home. If they make everyone stay in the house then fair enough. Take some antiseptic wipes and wipe down all the hard surfaces in the cottage. Have a good un.
We've got same with Whitby for Easter weekend Dave in an Airbnb. Unless the guidance has changed, or we are ill, I think we will aim to go. The only real issue is if they bring in lock down whilst there. In which case I imagine immediate travel to get home would be seen as acceptable if you set off as soon as the guidance changed?
I’m ahead of you , half way through a week in Wasdale, makes self isolating a doddle. Grike, crag Fell and Lank Rigg today, new hills for me. Back to more familiar hills tomorrow. Red Pike and round to Pillar.
Bit Jealous - I dont think I've done Grike Crag fell and Lank Rigg but have done the Pillar ,Red Pike round a couple of times - I once did Pillar via the High Level route - not sure I will be doing that again its a bit too exposed for my liking and extremely steep at the end but I love the main walk over it. Hope you have a good day
Well I think my original question has been answered. I’ll be walking around the garden and making ascent of the shed, without ropes I may add!
Wife was doing the Wainwright’s in her 60th year, that’s been knocked on the head now. I’ve been in support mode, missing the hills for the occasional Reds game.
Yep how quickly things change, we had a week in Wasdale with nobody but sheep for company. Never seen the lakes so empty. Then spring came, middle son lives at Ambleside. He reckons there were more folk there last weekend than on a bank holiday. Now no travel for hill walking.
After my 526 mile Wild Yorkshire Way walk last year, I was planning to walk from Dodworth to Hamburg this year, about 480 miles. That's a lot of circuits of the living room.
Such a difference now - this was Keswick yesterday Shameless plug for the guy who shot the video - He runs a boot shop called the Keswick Boot Company - an independent shop with great service - he also closed before forced so if you do need new boots and are in the area once things improve Id recommend using him instead of the likes of Sports Direct or even the bigger chain shops that are more responsible
