Toby foster on radio Sheffield had a good point when he asked why live I ban house with stairs when you can live in a bungalow and remove the risk of falling down the stairs? Over 250 people in the UK have died from falling down stairs since the coronavirus was declared a couple of months ago.
Why do people keep comparing the death rate to other causes of death? Surely you can see that the risk to this virus is huge? Worst case scenario being 80% of the population infected. assuming a 3.4% death rate (which was predicted by the WHO on 3rd March, unfortunately I can't see a more recent number) that's 1.8 million people dead. I'm not saying that will happen, it is very unlikely, bordering on impossible, but it's a risk.
Life is a risk. Getting into your car every day is probably one of the greater risks. Personally I intend to live my life until medical advice says different and that does include going to football matches if they're on.
I think that there needs to be a balance and each scenario risk assessed. If there is little evidence to suggest outdoor events is spreading the virus why cancel? The virus can remain on surface areas for up to 24 hours it is thought. Shopping trolleys are going to be a nightmare, yet nobody is calling for us to be banned from supermarkets. I get that sport is not essential, but the point im making is that everything has to be risk assessed appropriately.
Holding the games might be deemed safe for the crowd, but is playing contact sport a particularly good idea at the moment?
Generally though, most things you do are only a risk to yourself. The selfish thing about going to matches is you are risking everyone else, either because you may already have it and not know and pass it on, or you get it and not know for 2 weeks and pass it on. I don’t get how people are not understanding that. I’m not going on Tuesday if it is on and the risk to myself plays 0% of a role in that decision as I presume I’d recover just fine.
He's a Gooner. Still living on past glories. One of Arsene Wengers fiercest critics towards the end of his time at the Emirates.
Are you not going to work either? Im in contact with loads of people every day so a football match is no different.
Grapevine at work suggesting season might be declared null & void. No promotion/relegation. Repercussions absolutely massive.
In cricket they have the a metod to decide matches that are called off midway through . Maybe they could do something similar in 5 he league?
I know that’s what the experts are saying but I just can’t fathom their logic. Thousands of people in close proximity, sharing toilets, queuing for food, walking to the ground etc. will surely mean more chance of the virus spreading.
Yes but I have to go to work, that is not a choice. Every extra person is an extra risk and I sit a lot closer to people at a match than I do at work (the guy to my left at football may as well just sit on my knee to be honest he gets that cosy).
Maybe start next season with modest point deductions somehow calculated based on current standings? I.e. Liverpool start on 0, Man City start on -5 or summat, Leicester on -6 etc
