I’ve never heard this before but today I got talking to a bloke out and about when walking the dog, this guy was from Barnbrough and was now retired but he used to work for BE (British Electric) before they were bought out by EDF energy and he was telling me that Barnsley (penistone/dunford bridge area) was once considered as a location for a nuclear power station as it had of deep resovoirs close by to one and other and vast areas of land with a very low population.

just curious to know if this is correct? I always thought nuclear plants could only be built close to the sea?

Actually the plan was to build it on the outskirts of Sheffield. They reasoned that if there ever was a reactor leak, then the resulting mutants would easily blend in on the streets of Sheffield. Hmmmm maybe they did and it has already happened.... get Muldur and Scully in I say

Nuclear plants don't need to be close to the sea, but they do need access to large amounts of water. IIRC Only one of Germany's 18 is on the coast...

The pitch at Oakwell - there is always a copious supply of water there.
