Now that the government are starting to explain their immigration policy, I just want to point to a very small word that they use that has a massive potential to deceive. Particularly relevant if you voted leave because of immigration. The word is net. It's what they preface the word immigration with.
EXAMPLE. Population 70,000,000 1 person leaves the country, 1 person arrives in the country. The population is still 70,000,000 and net immigration is 0
THEREFORE, it follows that if 1,000,000 people arrive and 1,000,000 leave, the population is still 70,000,000 and net immigration is still 0.
SO. If 70,000,000 leave and 70,000,000 people arrive, the entire population is made up of immigrants, there's no UK citizens left AND net immigration is still 0!
    Lies, damned lies and statistics!!!

My worry is that all these well qualified immigrants are going to come over here, get all the highly paid skilled jobs and us Brits are going to be stuck with the low pay, unskilled jobs these immigrants won't do....ridiculous

You’ve just predicted Daily Mail’s narrative for the next 10 years. Bravo.

Turns out that it's not about the economy after all - for the people you're aiming this at it's just about making sure there are fewer foreigners.

Also, the word 'net' shouldn't have the potential to deceive anybody who isn't an idiot.

Not sure what you're getting at, haven't they always quoted net figures?
Using a daft hypothesis, if 70,000,000 come in and nobody leaves net immigration is 70,000,000 leaving a small country like ours with a 140,000,000 population which is not sustainable.

According to Pritti Patel the ‘ economically inactive ‘ are going to pick up the unskilled work , that’s Students , people not working due to ill health and the retired , basically you’ve got to pick 20 pundits of strawberries or a couple of stone of potatoes before you get your old age pension or be able access education or the Health Service !!

Apparently there are 8.5 million people in this country who can fill those roles ....don't remember that number being mentioned at the election when we were told we had record numbers in employment

Yes the economically inactive will perform the care, packing, fruit picking etc, so called low skill but certainly low paid jobs.

The economically inactive. But who are they? I thought we had record low numbers of unemployed?

The biggest ever proportion of population in work?

Who could have predicted that a Tory agenda, sorry, ‘manifesto’ would be shown to be lies within two months of retaking office?

And as for the OP, if the term ‘net’ was a confusing factor but no longer is, look up what Barnsley FCs net transfer spend has been over the last two years and then summarise how much money the owners have actually spent.

When you’ve stopped worrying how many mucky foreigners are coming over ‘ere tekkin us jobs n that

I'm one of them. So is anyone else who retired before the age of 65.

    From BBC:

    27% (2.3m) students
26% (2.2m) sick, mostly long term sick
22% (1.9m) looking after home or family
    13% (1.1m) retired early
11% (0.9m) other, includes waiting for results of job applications, not started looking for work, or dont need to work.

The ONS reckon that the headline figure of 8.48m is made up of:
    6.61m people who don't want/need a job
1.87m people who would like a job

The idea that we have over 8m people who could fill the shortages sounds a tad optimistic to me.

There are a few UK citizens I'd happily do without. Those with an irrational hatred of people from other nationalities, for starters.

I’m not aiming at anybody at all. Just pointing out that the government can make anything sound like they’re doing their job when they’re not. Your 2nd paragraph leads me to believe you’ve read some of the replies to my post.

The vast majority of immigration into this country is from outside the EU. The UK government has always had complete control over these numbers. Just remember that when they talk about 'taking control of immigration'.

Me too. I don't know how I ever found time to work. Anybody relying on me to pick spuds or strawberries might have to go back to eating meat. ;)

I’ll tell you something else as well, but I think from your post that you might already be aware,
Tony Blair’s government foresaw the possible stretch on the NHS, schools etc due to the influx of foreign workers and put aside a sum of money to alleviate it. The tories scrapped that fund when they came into government. So the reason schools are overcrowded and under funded and there’s long waiting times at hospitals isn’t the immigrants fault, surprise surprise, it’s the tories yet again being happy to let others take the blame for their own failures.
And when I say yet again, I refer to the their constant blaming of the EU for everything negative that happened on their watch for years and years.

That so called low skill job of care work where those in the role are responsible for the lives of others. Doesn't sound low skill to me, but the government haven't explained why they think it is.

I've worked on wards in mental health and a large proportion of lowly paid healthcare assistants are non-UK citizens from Africa etc. I'd love to know how they think they will fill these vacancies as a lot of people don't tend to want to wash elderly and severely mentally people for a living- too posh to wash. We shall see.
