Don't get me wrong I do hope we stay up which itself will be nothing much short of miraculous. But say we did , would we have another sale of our top assets ie Woodrow, Mowatt and Brown or would the board hang on to them and strengthen the squad? Because they sold Pinnock, Moore and Lynsey last time so why would they not repeat that again. Makes you wonder doesn't it? ..
No doubt in my mind that whatever league we are in next season if offers come in for any player that meets the boards valuation for that player then they are gone, we are pure and simply a retail outlet for football players in a way that even a "selling" club like ours hasn't been before. To our board league position is of secondary importance to player sale profit generation.
The Board have repeatedly said that the previous policy under Patrick of unearthing talented players, improving them and hopefully then selling them for profit would continue under their tenure. That leads you to suppose that at the end of this season, they could possibly sell our best assets to the highest bidder and then continue to repeat the excercise every season thereafter whilst ever they are in ownership of the Club. They don't seem to be in it for the glory. It's patently obvious they are interested in creating year on year profits. Thus far, they have ploughed the majority of that back into the Club, but if we did ever get to the Premiership , in my opinion it would be doubtful that they would do anything " crazy",to ensure we stood any chance of remaining there by making funds available over and above what we would achieve purely from our elevation.
We will always sell players. It’s the club model. It’s also the Model clubs like Brentford are following. The trick though is to sell just one or at most 2 players in the summer not half a team. We coped ok selling Bradshaw and Potts. We didn’t cope when in one window we lost Davies Lindsay Pinnock and Moore. I think had we kept Pinnock or even Moore we would have several more points and would probably be in the group of clubs above the drop zone. I expect us to sell Woodrow in the summer no matter what league. As long as someone gives us at least 5 million for him. Maybe less if we go down. Hopefully the board learnt its lesson in the summer about selling the spine of the team though
Agree with most of this, the trick is as you say to sell one or two but I would add for good money, that enables it to supplement the club and buy replacements. £5 million won’t do that. If we can get close to double figures it does otherwise I fear we need to sell more than one.
where Brentford have it right and we have it so wrong is they seem to have the replacement identified and ready at the point of selling the star asset. we seem to have a scatter gun approach and gamble one of the young ones will be ok. this may change as things develop, Brentford didn't start by selling players for £22 million quid like they did with neil maupey, and they had managers quit in mark warburton because it was a bit different. They also took the decision to close their academy, they pick up discarded players at 16 to 18 and develop them from there. Its not a bad idea as players develop at differing ages, jacob brown for instance was discarded by 2 separate academies.
So we doomed and were going down or if we stay up were selling half our team. The delights of the BBS. We've sold players since Preedys been in charge, it's not going to change unless we suddenly start getting an extra 10k at the gates, finish the stadium and become more of a prospect for players. The main thing is that the board have to get the right money for the players, we said Pinnock was undervalued Conway said that's all that was on the table. We need to play a bit harder in the negotiations. Nothing under £8m should be considered for Woodrow, we haven't got any other player in the squad that commands anything near that.
There’s no doubt whatsoever there will be another fire sale and there’s no doubt also that no fees will be publiscised
Never before have we had owners worth $9 Bn. Some say reports of their worth are exaggerated. So if by a factor of 10, they'd still be worth 900 Million. By a factor of 100, 90 Million. Clearly Patrick Cryne thought they had the wealth to take the club forward. No-one expects them to sink their own money in, but they have the financial standing to draw money into the club to invest in stability in the second tier. If we continue like we did when the owners had nowt (comparatively) then I think that's pretty disappointing. But that's how it looks like being. For me, if they had any honesty towards the fans, they would provide a right to hand in renewed ST's for a refund up until 24 hours after the summer window closes.
That's one of things I'm dubious about Orsen. I can't help but think why us? If you have billions what do you need millions for?
Patrick might have been suckered in by the new stadium and training complex at Nice. He didn't leave a lasting legacy at Oakwell as John Dennis did with the Stadium improvements and the academy complex. I'm sure that was on his agenda.
The £5 million was the figure I think would tip the clubs "cash in now" threshold especially if we went down - maybe if we stay up we will be not so desperate . I hope I am wrong - if Peterborough can get close to £10 million for Toney (I know its an if) we should be getting over that for Woodrow - but I dont have confidence that our negotiation skills are up there. People know Peterborough ( and now Brentford) wont sell cheap - we historically have been a soft touch - Something that doesn't seem to have changed if we sold Pinnock for a mere £3 Million.,
The owners will try to balance the books. However, part of me thinks that some of our key players will stay until January 2021 so that the owners can see how the land lies.
Players won't come even if the above is done. They will come if we have ambition, if they have the chance to play good football in the championship. That and being paid more money!
Where the board got it right was to get excellent money for Lindsay and Moore, where they got it wrong was to get a pittance for pinnock.
This selling club topic becoming boring. As ive said before every club is a selling club. The players hold all the cards if they are performing well.We are a small town club with a very average attendance. Does anybody in their right mind think that if Hourihane had been offered the same money as he was reportedly getting at villa he would have stopped. No chance and that goes for most of the payers who have left over the last few years.
If we are ever to progress as a club we MUST get proper value for our assets Woodrow should not be leaving this club for anything less than £10m that said he probably has a release clause in his contract and so that ship may well have sailed
In fairness Redhelen we paid enough money for Woodrow and Mowett to sign new deals with us.i suppose its where do the board draw the line.If its true we offered Pinnock circa 10k to become our highest ever player and he turns it down what do we do.
