Opening a new Warehouse in Barnsley. Largest in Europe, will be able to handle over 1.3 million parcels per day. Will create 1,300 jobs. Expected to open in 2022. Nice to see some investment
Was (or is) the Greek god of trade, wealth, luck, fertility, animal husbandry, sleep, language, sleep and travel. He was patron of shepherds and herald and messenger of mount Olympus. A bit of a polyglot he must have had his work cut out even for a god.
Most of them I would guess will be self employed couriers, working from out of cars. Son in law is manager for Lincoln branches
Whereabouts is this going to be only place I can think is big enough is somewhere at dodworth near motorway junction
I doubt it. This looks like a major distribution centre, the parcel delivery happens from small local hubs most of them might be on zero hours minimum wage though
I wouldn't be surprised if advanced notice of this development is the reason for the new junction there
You're right. No couriers will operate from the DC. They've decided to build it there as ASOS, next and other of the big clients are all local to Barnsley and it will take less time for them to be processed at the Sheffield courier distribution. Parcels will get sorted and sent to the major depots IE Sheffield and eurocentral, from there they get sent to smaller depots which are hidden away in industrial estates where couriers pick up from. Hermes are really challenging now, there's o my royal mail who deliver and process more parcels.
Makes a lot of sense, that. 1,300 jobs. Apparently there are about 4,500 on job seekers in Barnsley. About 1/3 of them will be able to get a job (in theory). Not bad going, that. Let’s see how many of that 4,500 actually want to work...
Actually it’s apparently 2,200 on job seekers according to this: https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/reports/lmp/la/1946157120/report.aspx#tabwab So almost 2/3 of people on job seekers can be employed here.
It's not a luxury but it's a choice for way too many. And those who choose it make the genuine claimants who want work look so bad which is awfully. They're some of the most selfish people around.
A company choosing to bring a huge number of jobs to the region after Brexit instead of the world ending, who'd have thought it.
When it says 1300, it normally includes those that work on the build as well.. From tea lady to site agent and all contractors. But great news all the same..
Never said it was. The aim of Job Seekers is to help people find jobs, though. I’m sorry, but there are some that don’t attempt to find a job, that have been on the dole for years. That’s taking advantage of the system.
Aye, now that workers rights are being stripped away and the Government will happily condone the reintroduction of slave labour...who'd have thought it.
