" A Christmas Carol " BBC

absolutely fantastic for me. Made by the guys who did "Peaky Blinders" which has been totally brilliant too IMHO.

 

I love ''A Christmas Carol' so I wasn't sure that I would like this remake but I absolutely love it. It's a fantastic, gripping remake and I can't wait to watch it tomorrow and buy the DVD. Guy Pearce is brilliant as Scrooge as are the rest of the cast. 10/10.

 

I always read it Christmas Eve night. Think I'll have to watch it on catch up.

 

I'm more of a traditionalist on this one. Yes it's a great version but there's things I can't get my head round.
I struggle with a Victorian f word and a black Mrs Cratchitt. Maybe it's meant to upset my boring equilibrium.
I like the traditional Patrick Stewart version but hey ho, each to their own.

 

no way does Dickens tell of her race, creed or colour.

 

I am beginning to think that the BBC version isan examination of mental health . I have read the book many times and now wonder if Dickens was taking a look at mental health all those years ago when he wrote it.... remember we had some seriously bad asylums, institutions, schools , factories etc etc back then... it's certainly made me take a whole new take on Dickens.

 

This is a brilliant adaptation, the acting is first class and it fits with our society of today allowing actors of whatever colour to showcase their talent, the BBC casting department, as usual, have got it spot on

 

Yep I had the same issues. As well as the hint of Australian accent in Guy Pearce's voice and occasional scouse in Stephen Graham's accent.
That said, I still quite enjoyed episode 1 on it's own terms so may well give episode 2 a go.

Same with Cumberbatch doing Sherlock Holmes. I quite enjoyed it but it felt more like I was watching an episode of Dr. Who. Prefer the Basil Rathbone stuff by a country mile.

 

Can’t beat Alastair Sim as Scrooge for me can’t stop thinking of neighbors with this one

 

I’m actually quite enjoying it but I’m struggling with certain parts of the story line, (don’t want to give anything away for those that haven’t seen it) not sure how true it is but according to reports the BBC have had loads of complaints and they’ve lost over a million viewers already.

 

I've really enjoyed it so far and am looking forward to how it handles the finale.
Being an old traditionalist, though, Alastair Sim will always be my favourite Scrooge.

 

I turned off when she burned Tiny Tim's letter the tinker.

 

Brilliant, but still a pale imitation of ‘Muppet Christmas Carol’.

 

I know I'm a bugger for turning things political, but it reminds me so much of this Tory government. Factory fire and cutting costs in the coalmines wooden beams which led to people dying..

 

Also looking forward to the BBC 'Dracula' trilogy series, on 1St jan too.

 

If he can't get on with a black woman as Mrs Cratchitt he'll have a heart attack if he ever watches A Muppet Christmas Carol...

 

Have to say I love the original. In time it was made nearly as near the book as written as present day, well not quite but near enough for me to be a piece of history. My Dad (born 1936), loves this version, so we've watched it a lot & as much as other versions are maybe as good / better this is the one that resonates. Book was 1843 , this version was 1951. That is now 68 years ago. Still a long way to go, but a lifetime away. The David Lean Great Expectations is my all time favourite. Never a dry eye in the house when that is on.

I had it on catch up and put the first one on last night.

Don’t know if it was just the excitement of Christmas Eve (I’m lucky enough to still have young kids), but I found it boring and turned it off after 20 minutes.

I won’t bother with it now (the time has passed really hasn’t it!).

I was surprised I didn’t love it as I love Peaky Blinders and Taboo, I suppose they had a similar atmosphere to them but I found it to be dragging and the dialogue very mumbled.

Our lass’s mam raved about it though (which is why I got the first couple on catchup and set the sky box up for last nights), and I also know I’m in a minority that wasn’t keen.
