You do realise there were Tory remainers as well, their party was around two-thirds Leave to one-third Remain. The difference was that more Tory Remainers stayed loyal to their party, than did Labour's Leavers.
36% of 2019 Tory voters in the Lord Ashcroft (think thats his name) leaving poll identified as Remainers.
Err did you read the twitter thread I was referring to. It’s an attack on those who say labour needs to stay far left and the Tory version of Labour under Blair was as bad as the Tories. Nothing in that indicates the current Tories are a centre party though
But the headline (and the first tweet simply states... !If Labour moves to the centre, we will be indistinguishable from Tories." It doen't distinguish between Tories in the Blair era and now. So, sorry, I STILL don't understand. "The same as" implies Labour centre = Tories (centre?) or am I being dense? (Don't answer that)
Did you read the thread ? It’s an attack on those who make the claim. But obviously either you didn’t read it or didn’t get the point it was making
easy one this matey - most of the demographic you have eluded to are too young to remember the socialist type policies of the seventies, like the nationalisation of the railways for example - ah yes when all platforms stank of ****, the trains were filthy dirty and the train doors had to be opened from the outside, just to give you a better chance of killing yourself - before going home and getting the candles ready to light up for when the power strike commenced that evening - most of the people I know around 30-40 have no idea wtf it was like at that time - ignorance is bliss though eh
And your insinuating its better now ? At six times the comparative price ? Dirty trains and platform are easily solved bring on nationalisation.
Marlon - are you seriously saying the trains, stations and platforms are worse now than they were in the seventies - put the bottle down now mate ffs
The Labour Gov nationalised the railways after they were elected in 1945 mate - the brunt of the power cuts were after 1974 when Wilson took over -
Ffs that’s fifty years since , course they’re better now. But that’s because of the investment before they were privatised because goodness knows there not much investment gone on outside the privateers flag ship city stations . Ask the regular commuters . If as your saying it’s better now why are the vast majority of commuters agreeing with the concept nationalisation ? or are you saying you know more than them . The popular idea if nationalisation isn’t in line with your living in the past ideals .
yes - Corbyn chose to hang his hat on the re-nationalisation message and LOST - and most people I know commute - I know the poll you are referring to with 64pct of commuters agreeing with the concept of nationalisation but how old were these people in the poll Marlon ? - a lot are probably too young to remember BR as I stated in a previous post - rail delays are unacceptable I agree with you on that and more money needs to be pumped into the system especially in northern regions but the answer is not re-nationalising the rail service imo
If more money is given to the industry on its present status it’ll go on salaries and bonuses .boot the greedy bards our. As far as surveys are concerned they interview a wide range of commuters as in any other survey on anything else . Always gets me when surveys don’t suit they are fixed
None of those things were a result of Nationalisation though; and suggesting there’s a link frankly makes you look a bit daft. most of the worlds best railways are publicly owned, meanwhile our ‘privately owned’ but lucrative railways are using rolling stock that’s been unfit for purpose for the last 40 years.
Or maybe they’re bright enough to ask questions not coloured by doctrine: Dad why are the french and Chinese building our nuclear power stations? That’s easy son; we put it out to tender, because government has no place getting involved, private industry does it better! but Dad; aren’t the French and Chinese companies doing it State Owned? stop asking stupid questions, you’re too young to remember how horrible the 70s were.
The Brunt of the power cuts were in the 3 day week in 1974 under Ted Heaths Tory government if my memory is correct. Yes Labour Nationalised the Railways The Tories wrecked them under Beechings cuts Labout Nationalised the health servise as well - doubtless you think that was a mistake too especially since it has gone downhill under Tory government control over the last 9 years
I'd like to see rail routes safe guarded for so many years after closures. The Beeching axe was so much more than rationalisation. The back handers in favour of motorways caused closure of extremely viable routes. These routes eventually became rights of way for walkers and ramblers. Some had housing built across track beds. Years later local authorities want to re-open some of these lines but can't because it's too expensive to go round industrial units and housing. It was an absolute travesty what happened. On the Dearne Vally line south of Pontefract Baghill the spur was lifted to South Elmsall. Further down the line at Manvers the line looping round to Mexborough was lifted in the eighties so trains have to go as far as Brightside Junction to loop round to Doncaster via Tinsley. This makes any future services to Doncaster via Pontefract along this line pie in the sky.
I think you will find that the best railway in the world by general consensus is Japan, and it is privately owned -
It was the best in the world whilst still government owned. so the only point you could make was only half right. Well done though for at least trying to answer one.
