TBH I for one am sick of the whole of this nonsense. I do not see ONE worthy politician in any of the parties. The GE will turn out to be all about Brexit and not the future. As for giving the vote to 16 year olds well thats just ridiculous.
Why is it ridiculous to give the vote to 16 year olds? (Though the amendment hasn't been selected so it wont be included anyway) Do you think settled EU nationals should be allowed to vote?
I think its absurd as many will not know the first thing about poitics and will be targetts for gerimandering . As for nationals, thats a difficult one. Perhaps a qualyfying period of x amount of years and if they take on British citizenship.
So if the issue is people not knowing anything about politics.... what about people over the age of 18 who have no clue? There have been plenty of videos linked on this site that have shown absolute morons openly talking aloud of their views which have nothing to do with reality. I'd argue there are maybe more 16 and 17 year olds that know more than the 70s plus
Warning - possibly ageist rant. All those over 70 who are the popular target of fraudsters, who complain that they can't spot a scam because 'it looked very convincing' who never fact check anything... But come Question Time and they're 'old and wise' they 'remember how great this country can be' etc etc. In a nutshell - they fall for any old b0110x online and expect sympathy when they've been ripped off, unless they've fallen for political b0110x in which case they know 'the truth'.
they might be able to spell politics though joking aside I think they should be given the vote, there are some immensely clever 16 and 17 year olds, why not let them vote too, Settled EU nationals can already vote in local elections I believe
We have an ageing population. 65+ in 2017 was projected at 18.2%, while under 16 were 18.9% Its therefore obvious 65+ is a much bigger group than 16-17 year olds. The 65+ audience is projected to be 24% of the population by 2037.
Of course 16 year olds should be given the vote! They're our future, they have almost their entire lives in front of them, and they're also those that are going to be most affected if Brexit actually happens.
I doubt that, when I look around and see all the Young mothers with 4 or more kids. On their way to the post office for their giro... then round to the convenience store for their rollies kit.
I must say, if I reach 75, and if that was a cap on my voting time... I wouldn't complain at all. My life would be pretty much lived and my life choices made. I may be more reliant on some aspects of the country than younger people, but I'd be content the future was theres.
Settled foreign nationals are not allowed to vote in elections in any other European country. Why do you think we should be any different?
I suggest you take this up with the ONS. Or you may have just missed that people are living long so as new people enter 65+, they are adding to that group and not replacing those who have passed away.
now thats an interesting view. Or maybe make a room 101 and just terminate them. Or make them go on a 'Logans Run' get caught and be terminated.
So the people who are resident in this country, live in this country, pay taxes in this country... don't get a say in that country? If they are allowed to vote in council elections, they should absolutely be allowed to in General Elections. I'm sure if they were more inclined to vote for the Right Wing and be leave orientated.... they'd absolutely be allowed to vote in a GE.
