Apparently we rank 18th of 24. It’s an opinion piece and as such quite arbitrary but interesting none the less https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/225135-2-facebook/7
Without reading through all the others I wouldn't argue too much. We do have lots of empty seats and the away fans seem isolated and distant.
It's interesting, isn't it? Three matches stand out for atmosphere at Oakwell for me. The 1-0 win over Man City (League Cup, 1981) was rocking, with nearly 34,000 in the ground. But the pinnacle was surely Bradford (Championship, April 1996) and Man United (FA Cup, February 1997). Only 18,600 for those latter two games, but by then the East Stand had been built, ramping up the volume. Crucially, those two games occurred before we built an away end with some 33% greater capacity than the home end! Sadly, games like those with so much at stake are very few and far between.
Whole design of the ground is awful, doesn't help the atmosphere and the north east corner - a prominent view on the cameras is an eye sore. We'd best get it right on the field first though.
Most matches in the prem tbh. Think atmosphere was helped when you could sit where you liked in Ponte as well before the prem season.
My mum watched Man Utd in the 1970s. I got her a ticket for Chelsea and she said she'd never heard anything like that night.
Didn't really help atmosphere though - pretty flat as well mid 90's. Only east and west stand in use but new ponty didn't make much of a difference. Crowds were poor mid 90's
I wouldn't read too much into that article, the atmosphere around most clubs in England are dying at the moment. Even the big teams that are famous for their atmosphere like Liverpool and Man Utd have frequent comments against them these days about how poor their atmosphere is now.
Its like anything. Depends on the opposition and style of game. Last year for example, a 0-0 draw with Wimbledon with 200 away fans the place was silent. However fast forward to a 0-0 with Sunderland on a Tuesday night with 3,000 away fans the atmpsphere was pretty decent. If whoever has wrote that article came to a game against a Wimbledon, Wycombe type they're going to think that. The guy who does the Away Days videos on social media, ive seen two of his videos. Against Leeds the other week and when we played Peterbrough away last year on both occasions he mentions the good atmposphere from Barnsley fans, id respect his opinion more as he visits different clubs weekly. I'm not saying Oakwell is bouncing weekly because its obviously not. But when the opposition and on field product is there it can be decent.
Few year ago against Leeds when Hourihane stuck that free kick in. Hostile, electric atmosphere all the way through that match. Last time i've seen the Ponty end stood up for the entirety of the match as well.
Must be written by a Leeds fans with the mammoth away following or someone who heard it on the telly and he has done well to get to all 24 grounds this season. Its a very in depth piece ours innit.
