I don't think think it's racist. But I'm not really up for a discussion on here because I don't want to be called names. I had a long discussion about it last night with my two best friends, one of whom is black. I hate that I have to add that caveat but I kind of think I do. I've read the phrase pseudo intellectual on here, which annoys me to distraction. I understand the meaning of the word racist where as most of the people using that word in this thread and many like it simply don't. But apparently ignorance takes precedent over research and education. Not intelligence, but arming yourself with knowledge on a subject by reading about it is now frowned upon. I don't know how you expect reasoned debate when your starting point is that you're right and anyone with a counter opinion is wrong. That doesn't allow for debate. I agree with the point made that some of our fans are racist. I believe the racist element within our support is in higher concentration amongst those who don't sing this song than those who do. We have a problem with the behaviour of some of our younger fan base. We have an even greater problem with the attitude of my generation and above towards our younger fans which means it will never be fixed and is, frankly, appalling. I guess the reason I've replied is that I'm sensitive to the absolute of I'm right and you're wrong. That's my bad. I think you're wrong, but that doesn't mean you are. I do, however, think it's far more nuanced than you are claiming.
It's too easy to excuse the song as not having racist intent. Clearly it doesn't. Those singing it aren't deliberately trying to be racist. They're just thick. They don't, or won't, understand that anything that perpetuates a racial stereotype is wrong.
The absolute isn’t mine; The club have told us they consider it racist and if we continue to sing it we will be seen by the outside world as racists. I’ve consistently said the same thing. I’m happy to have to explain the reason it’s racist ad-nauseum, but it’s irrelevant, and you’re free to disagree, but again it’s irrelevant.
Trouble is Jay it isn’t up for discussion as to whether it is racist. There isn’t a debate. It’s not something we can form an opinion on. The club have stated they believe it to be, Kick It Out have done the same, national media outlets are reporting Barnsley for singing racist songs. Whatever the intent, even if it is a positive stereotype (if there is such a thing), there is no hiding from it. The opinion of one black man that he doesn’t feel it is racist isn’t that relevant. It doesn’t have to cause offence to everyone. The relative football authorities aren’t going to declare the song as fine and take no action based on that.
I won't sing the song because it's just a really crap song. It also crosses the line of racial stereotyping and is putting the Football Club in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. But you're right. The vast majority aren't singing the song because they think it's racist. They think it's funny. Each to their own, but the kids (and the Dads of kids as proved by videos on Saturday) just find singing about our Centre Back's tackle in a non-footballing sense almost cult like.
I don’t believe it’s about the song or the player any more, it’s because it’s banned and they can ‘sing what they want’ so it’s taken on a new appeal for them.
I disagree. As much as the world is more connected than ever with Social Media, they'll still be people singing it that haven't seen the challenge on it being racist. Not everyone lives in our bubble. It's one of the 'in tunes' right now for football songs. It lends itself to being sung over and over. There's an element that will be singing it in an anti-establishment way because they've been told not to, others because they know it's racist, but then a majority because it's funny/upbeat. I know the words are different, but England fans at the Nations League Finals sang the Harry Maguire versions non-stop for four days - even at the actual final between Portugal and Holland.
The fact that it is the adapted Maguire one makes me more convinced that it is racist as the words for Harry were about something that we can see is big. To be equivalent for Bambo they should sing ‘his arms’ or ‘his thighs’ or something that they can see. The fact they went straight to ‘****’ leaves no doubt in my mind whatsoever that it is purely because he is black. Btw, I only quoted you because you mentioned Maguire, not because I think you do or don’t think it is racist.
It's actually an adaption of the Lukaku song to be honest - which created similar negative headlines. I don't think anyone will dispute the words of the song are because he's black. That's obvious to everyone, and those that have tried to deny that in this thread with 'what if we sung it about Perkins, is it racist then' are just digging a deeper hole. What I'm trying to put across is that a significant majority don't believe it's racist and aren't singing it because it is.
Yes, I know. The last line of my post was to say that I was making a different point to you, not disagreeing with you. I fully understand and agree with what you are saying.
Sorry Im not here to jump at your command. Theres only two people in the world who hold that power. Neither, thankfully are you. There is a considerable difference between the Diaby song and the expirences you claim to have witnessed with your brother in law... Jays post sums it up alot more elequently than I can thankfully. As for what you suggest has happened re references to the linesmans colour etc turn round and tell them to shut the **** up. Challenge them instead of coming on here with your autistic screeching about whats been said. I have done more than once and will continue to do so. Thankfully the number of times I have to pipe up is going down season by season. And its not just Farages and Tommy Robinson types either since we are discussing sterotypes. Ive been out with my missus with people who were quite active in the Edl yet they are nothing but polite and the only piss taking or abuse is as usual at my expense. The worst abuse directed to black players etc ive challenged comes from dyed in the wool union men. . . While we are at it, I didnt see you pipe up when a number of posters on this forum were close to suggesting the new tory cabinet Bame members were 'coconuts' Thats racist. Or doesnt it count cos its the Tories.? I cant wait til we play Donny next. Half this forum will be straight in with the Pikey references including some of those who are shout loudly about Diaby. Then you look at the shouting contests. Half of this and others of this ilk are nowt but slagging folk off. Bullying. Belitting. Some comments bordering on liabelous.threats of violence. Its typical frothing at the mouth see who can wind themselves up into a fury social media frenzy. Perhaps sometimes instead of chomping at the bit waiting for the next comment to blow up over. Put the phone down. If admin had much sense theyd locl this and the other threads like it.
Claim to have witnessed? Aye ok. I'm just making this all up. Silly me. Much ado about nothing. You'd better give the club a buzz to tell them that their statement was a waste of time. Frothing at the mouth? Threats of violence? Autistic screeching? I think this is possibly the worst post I've ever read on here, which is some going. If you're happy with the racists at our club then crack on. As I've stated previously I've emailed the club and tried to do something about it. I've raised it to Stewards. It's pretty difficult though when you've got 50 drunken yobs all at it. Don't mind me. Edit: You still didn't answer my post. Am I wrong to be offended when I see and hear racist abuse at football. Answer the question. Don't skirt around it. Answer it. Am I wrong to be offended by racism.
‘Dyed in the wool’ Union men my arse, Trade Unions have always been anti- racist, just love how you link the Tory bit as well. Showing your true colours here. What’s up haven’t there been any atrocities lately that are linked to Islamic extremists because you’re usually the first one to post on here with them and strangely no posts about other atrocities such as white supremest killings. Activists in the EDL nice eh.
You're not up for a discussion so understand if you don't feel like replying to this. If you are, i'd be interested to hear what is your understanding of the meaning of the word racist and why you don't think this particular song is racist? My view(having also had a lengthy discussion with a friend who is black) is that a lot of people singing the song might not be racist, but it is a song that contains racism.
Loko...... How come you not merging this into the other thread aswell If you gunna piss about merging. Then at least merge 2 massive threads so we have another bigger one. No pun intended with the size of cocks either
Because one of the threads started well before the club put an Official Statement out earlier today. Therefore it felt like the two threads should continue to run side by side, and one of them was an update on the situation rather than just saying the same thing or deliberately stoking the fire.
I missed the bit about the EDL. I'm wasting my time replying to him then. "Some of my best friends are in the EDL"
My opinion is that it contains racial stereotyping, which can be dangerous in itself, but to be defined as racist it would require those singing it to believe they are superior to the person to whom they are singing the song about, on the grounds of their differing race (assuming everyone signing it is of a different race, which may not necessarily be the case). And/or displaying hatred to whom they are singing about. Neither of those conditions is true. I'm not arguing the song should be sung (in its present form, I actually like the tune). I don't like the lyric about his c@ck. The club have asked us not to which I believe we should respect. But as far as my understanding of the word goes, I don't believe it to be racist.
