Can anyone be arsed to tot it all up to see if we are in the red / black and have money so spend ? We are told all the money is going back into the playing squad after all
Don't forget "back into the squad" means wages too, so unless someone knows how much individual players are on it's an impossible task.
It's, unfortunately, more or less impossible. All fees are undisclosed. All are probably heavily structured on add ons to a basic fee. The issue of wages we are now offering muddies the waters plus we are also committing to longer contracts. We might have sold one player for 3 mil and bought a replacement for 2 but spent the extra million on a slightly higher wage and a longer contract.
I suppose that the reinvestment in the squad point brings out the need to sell to balance the books. The sale of Potts in January was determined necessary to 'balance the books' according to the CEO at the time. If you look at the last set of filed accounts and then take account of the reduced TV distribution then the club is looking at an operating deficit of around £4m (big assumption on relegation clauses in players contracts) although this could be over £7m if this were not the case. Without external injections of cash or a change in the operating model, even with the club back in the championship, player sales will be needed just to break even. This is with BFC having one of the lowest salary bills in the Championship. This just brings out how unsustainable most clubs are in the league without a combination of parachute payments or owners willing to throw in their personal wealth in the pursuit of the premier league. FFP?
No one knows, everything’s undisclosed to keep fans in the dark. That’s not a dig at Barnsley in-particular, it’s how most clubs do business unfortunately
Isn't it up to the board to bring in enough investment through sponsorship deals so us fans don't have to suffer when they weaken our team to balance the books?
It's a fair point that the directors should try to maximise revenue from all commercial activity. To put this in context, the last confirmed turnover figure was £14m with only £2m coming from merchandise and sponsorship. If the sponsorship revenue is to increase many clubs have found ways of doing this by using companies linked to the owners to pay very lucrative sponsorship contracts that push the commerciality bounds. Our most recent shirt sponsor shows that our owners are keeping the club as a self-financing asset, albeit with some newly introduced external debt.
Please dont even think that we have spent even close to what we have made selling all our prime assets. The spreadsheet doesn't work that way.....
