It’s completely different now to when Hecky and all the other good managers were here over the last 14 years. The players sold this close season are NOT Stendels signings. And - the recent signings are now (thank goodness) all on decent long contracts. Chalk and cheese to when Hecky was here. If Stendel walks away from this team building club then he’s a fool. Stendel isn’t a fool.
No - I’m telling you that these players are some of the left overs from a totally different era. This close season is the START of something we haven’t seen before at Barnsley.
He's risking his own future with us by backing himself. It would be easy for Stendel to accept the security of however many years we've been willing to offer him for getting promoted back to our natural level, with one of the biggest budgets in league one. Now if he doesn't succeed next season we will get shut. We plucked him from lower league obscurity in his homeland and gave him his biggest break yet. He repaid that by getting us promoted at the first time of asking. But if it's Christmas time with half season passes to sell and we are looking in a bad way, he will be let go to save our season and he might live to regret not signing a new contract now.
He knew the plan before he joined though? He’ll also know that this Summer will almost be the last of it in terms of wholesale changes. We’ll always have a couple leave, if we don’t then the strategy isn’t working.
Did he though really? I don’t imagine his interview involved how would you deal with losing your first choice keeper & centre backs. Can’t expect any loyalty on Stendels part by the same token.
With or without a contract managers either choose to leave for better things or are sacked cos results are poor. FWIW I think the whole club is buying into Stendels philosophies right down to the academy so even if we don't have a great start to the season I cant aee him getting sacked.
I listened to bits and from what I saw on the video the poor bloke was in some sense thrown to the wolves... His command of English whilst its come on leaps and bounds and needs applauding might be fine in a small group however he's not ready in my opinion to be doing the big media gigs.. and he through no fault of his own was out of his depth and let's face it the different accents in themselves create problems in their own ways for the best of us. That said he did his best to answer.. Contact wise he said nothing of note really other than what anyone else in his position would say.. Basically Status quo really look at it nearer the end all parties agree adding he's really happy at Barnsley.. What was interesting to note and maybe I'm reading too much into it... Darron Moore was very cagey talking about marquis and transfer possibility... If you look closely Ds gives a crafty smile before looking away... Then woe and behold when asked which player he would like from any of the South Yorkshire teams he names marquis... Wonder if we've put a cheeky bid in for him
Honestly think DS was just having a bit of a wind up tbh. Unless Moore is on his way of course. Can’t see the point otherwise.
It’s worth remembering he’s the head coach not the manager. The club owners have set the direction they wanted this pressing style and have brought in a coach and players to implement it. If he leaves none of these players, or very few, are his players they belong to the spreadsheet. So any new coach will be working under the same parameters - so no big clear outs to bring in their favourite players which is what the old dinosaurs do. I don’t think what he’s doing is particularly revolutionary anymore, maybe it’s true such tactics haven’t reached the third tier of English football much but I think we’ll find at least 1/2 the teams in the Championship deploying it.
having worked away for years ( cornwall, outer hebrides, kent to name a few) it would probs take me a lot longer to get home than it does for d.s. to go from barnsley to hannover and his kids maybe at that stage in their lives/education where it wouldnt be fair to uproot them and take them to a foriegn country where as d.s. can be 90 mins to manchester 1 hour on the plane and 30 mins home ( assuming he lives in the hannover area) so fly out tues lunch, fly back thurs morning. beer and a bratty job done
