Firstly - there should have been information from the club regarding the traffic lights on Pontefract Road. A real balls up - that will have put many of our supporters in a bad mood before they got to the ground. After wandering around the ground looking for a gate selling tickets - found just TWO gates selling tickets (poor organisation) in the East Stand. Stood in the queue that was painfully slow - no urgency from staff even though they knew there was a lengthy queue outside and fans were stood in the pouring rain. Now for the game. Goalkeeper - looks sound. Impressed. Centre backs - look solid and should get better in time. Diaby was our best player - excellent. Our left side was very weak - Ben Williams and Thomas just did not click. Thomas was poor throughout. Some have mentioned Sibbick being poor - but I think there is a player here. When Pinnilos came on he also was left for dead after some slick play by Sheffield - so pointing a finger at Sibbick is wrong. There was very poor passing from defence to midfield and from there to attack. Mowatt who is pivotal to all of this was poor - many of his passes going astray. We needed someone to link the play up and there wasn’t anybody available. I’m not the biggest fan of Bahre but he was missed. Probably as a replacement for Thomas. Halme on as substitute to plug a hole as a defensive midfielder - shows that we are lacking in that defensive midfield position. All the forwards (except for Thomas) looked up for it. Woodrow especially looking productive. Wilks and Chaplin working hard with little service from midfield. Thiam when he came on looked fitter and sharper than he did last season. As for Sheffield - their players were generally fitter, sharper, faster, stronger in the tackle than Barnsley players. Although Barnsley had lengthy patches of play - it was the Sheffield breakaways that looked more threatening - their players finding space as soon as Barnsley possession broke down - which it frequently did. Sheffield look a good Championship side. They don’t look Premeir league. But they look years ahead of Barnsley in their development. And yet it dosen’t seem that long ago on that eventful day that we went to Bramall Lane and saw them relegated to the 1st Division. So we lose 1-4 at home to one of our nearest and bitterest rivals. Another excuse for the Barnsley born Sheffield United fans to lord it over us. It was a mistake to play Sheffield United especially at this time. After all the positive news of all these Barnsley new signings - I for one was left feeling bitterly disappointed. This match will not have done the confidence of the Barnsley players and supporters any good. I suspect that Stendel will be upset and unnerved by what he saw. Probably only positive from the game for our management team was the realisation of how far we need to develop the players and team.
Really? Is your skin so thin that get upset by such crap ? As for the traffic light opening gambit, just how the **** is that the clubs fault? Bizarre.
Very fair assessment that. I reckon we'll be ok this season. Not marvelous but ok and have enough in the tank to comfortably stay up.
Think you’ve called it right apart from that playing Sheff Utd was the right move. You’ve got to put a yard stick out there. We played WBA last season and made them look poor - but they went on to do quite well - as did we.
Good review, thowt there wer bright points during the game but the obvious flaw was lack of understanding that can only improve with working together, Sibbick will develop into a decent player as will most of the newbies, bit nervous on the centre backs lack of cohesion bt individually they looked ok. Sheffield utd played most of the 1st team and their understanding of each other was the difference, said to my mate this is what we need to aspire to this season..
No point in just arranging friendlies that won't test you, or because the away teams fans might take the piss because they live locally. Anyone that feels that they have the bragging rights after a pre season friendly win aren't to be taken seriously. Hollow victory for such people. Stendel won't have lost any sleep last night. He'll have learned a bit more about his players, and will be a bit closer to knowing which 11 will start v Fulham, and the whole weeks training will be based on that. I doubt Wilder will be thinking they'll walk the premier league after their win either. It's just a friendly. The championship is going to be tough. There is a reason why clubs spend big money on fees and wages. That's what will have a bearing on where we finish, not a pre season friendly against a newly promoted premier league side.
What, all four of them? No-one born in Barnsley supports United. There's a few support Wednesday or Leeds, or Man U/Liverpool etc, but not Sheff United.
Just to point out. Luke prefers to play on the right. He was constantly in space but nobody got the ball over to him.
Yeah, I know 6 Utd fans. Far more realistic than Weds fans. They know next season could be a long one......
Hahahahaha!!! There were 3 Sheff United fans from Wombwell in the Arcade Ale House after the match. Called at Cortonwood this morning - on the Barnsley/Rotherham border. Counted more people wearing Leeds shirts than Barnsley. Counted more people wearing Sheff Wednesday shirts than Barnsley. Counted more people wearing Sheff United shirts than Barnsley. These are mostly people that are from the Dearne Valley part of the Barnsley District. This debate keeps getting brought up - if you don’t believe this then yer need to get out more.
Only you keep bringing it up. In fact the whole point of your original post was to clumsily shoe horn it in, as usual.
