which are proving to be duff/scam calls. We have caller display on the phone so don't have to answer but I thought I'd give the numbers a call back.... unavailable or not known ! I'm no expert at all on this sort of thing but how can scammers use std codes to phone from abroad, if that's where they are calling from. I had a call a few weeks ago showing the Coop Bank phone number and it was a scammer.... i put the phone down and then rang the bank itself. They didn't know it was happening but were interested to hear about it.
They use spoofing software to mask their number and make it look like something else. I switched my landline handset off about a year ago as I was being bombarded with them (never used it anyway). Very rarely get them on mobile.
Done the same, don't have a phone plugged into my landline, in fact don't need it all as I have virgin broadband but for reasons I can't fathom if I remove the phone they say my bill will go up.
I never answer calls from landlines or mobiles I don't know. My number is all over the internet but I rely on anyone serious leaving a message or emailing me.
Same as that JP... If I don't recognize the number I never answer it. If it's important they leave voice mail or a text..
I've had a few recently. Bet everytime I answer the line is dead. I Google the numbers and reports from others say its a scam. Sometimes there is deep satisfaction in telling those phoning you to fk off. I doubt very much that they will be offering anything to my advantage.
The other thing I do is if I don’t recognise it I just stay silent. I would suspect your voice triggers some automated answering system. It more than often hangs up.
Wife had one the other day from HMRC saying unless she dialled option 1 there would be a prosecution for unpaid tax, needless to say she ignored it but how many have been caught out and end up paying a fiver a minute.
if you pickup and don't say anything the machines normally listen for a hello - if you are quiet they normally just hang up. If they are real they will prompt you - still get some trash but just tell them to sling their hook and then add the number to the ever increasing block list. Even better - you ask them to call you back on a different number and give them police station number or something. If you are feeling like playing see how long you can keep them on the phone by just saying random stuff then leave handset for a while then pickup and ask something else and go round.... lol can be a bit of a game if you are feeling that way out at the time.
Have been gerrin on quite well with an Indian gadgy called Simon, so much so that the tables have turned and he nows just tells me to **** off when he phones up.
Got the same mate when I got back off hols. Message left on landline phone. Thought wtf. Lad put me wise. I Googled it. SCAM. I hope these fkres rot in hell.
Had dozens of them recently - I love the ones where they tell me my computer is broke. Keep them on for a good half an hour
I'm with Plusnet and have the same conundrum. I lose the broadband discount if I remove the call package, so I would be a few quid per month worse off.
Non of them ever do. Only land lines I answer are gigs we have in that town, or places we work regularly. I answered a a Wakefield call on Saturday night, where a DJ had taken their money & failed to show up & I had a DJ on site in 45 minutes, that saved their wedding. Being a nice guy I didn't profit out of it & just got the DJ paid. I'm hoping the venue takes notice that rip off merchants need to be vetted. Not holding my breath. Too many people will go for the cut price ****** that doesn't offer a proper contract or insurance.
