Christianity is far from perfect and like any religion it has its nut-jobs aligned to it (not as many as some religions thankfully) but yes at least homosexuality is not punishable with death due to religious bigotry and medieval beliefs.
Do you think I disagree on your last sentence? Any country that puts its citizens to death is barbaric. The USA has a terrible human rights record & if you are black you are far more likely to face the death penalty. https://news.un.org/en/story/2017/1...y-has-no-place-21st-century-un-chief-guterres
I'd say that Islam is pretty much on the same path as Christianity but just running about 500 years behind it. Maybe by the 26th century it will be as relevant as the C of E. Mind you the state of the bible belt in America is a sad reminder that the bigotry within Christianity is not dead yet.
We are lucky that we have a reasonably educated populace & one that is not highly fundamentalist, so there are no masses to appeal to in that respect. Ireland has started to move forward, despite the best efforts of the Catholic Church there. Northern Ireland is still hanging on due to some Protestant nut jobs, who are propping our government up. Blame is all over the place. As i said in my first thread though you can't throw the baby out with the bath water, as many people of faith are loving, caring people too.
Plenty of bigotry in Christianity but not many people being killed in the name of it. Christians are probably the most victimised religious group in the world.
I'm losing the will to live Conan. Are you aware of the days of slavery? That was all carried out by "religious" people. Trump claims to be a born again christian. I don't believe him. He ***** hookers.
"Parliament has been a dominant force in shaping the Religious life of the nation. The C of E was created by Parliamentary Statue and the Church is part of the State."
The relevance and influence of the church in Ireland has virtually been swept aside in the last 10 to 15 years in the wake of the countless cover ups of sexual abuse by priests and cruelty within church run orphanages etc.
Me too. And now you've brought slavery into it. Let's leave it there because you are all over the place.
That's only because the countries where Christianity took hold are mostly now secular and it's lost its hold. There are some disgusting cruelties perpetrated in the name of Islam, in Hindhuism, etc. Let's not kid ourselves that back in the day Christianity was any better.
Here's my take on Jesus the supposed son of God. Mary got pregnant out of wedlock, it was frowned upon 40 years ago let alone 2000 odd years ago. 3 farmers helped her and gave her shelter, they also gave her food, clothing and money ( pardon the spelling any grammar nazi's) which over time as become the 3 wise men and gold, francensense and mur ( pardon the spelling) He was crucified and placed in a cave with a rock in front, the Roman's at the time moved is body so he didn't have a burial and become a place of pilgrimage ( aka Bin laden at sea) and a martyr. It manifested over time into he rose I believe that jesus did exist but so do Chinese whispers. This is my opinion btw but respect others who do believe
The point is it's better now. The best countries to live in are (generally) Christian but moving towards secularism.
Religion and religious bigotry is still a problem in Northern Ireland. On one side you have the DUP and on the other you have Sinn Fein, both equally divisive and intolerant. Like you say we are quite fortunate in this respect.
Two Christian friends of mine were discussing homosexuality and said sex between 2 men was wrong in their eyes. I said "you're quite right. It's usually up the bum".
Yep I'd agree he existed , but he was just a regular person who campaigned for a fairer society . What do they say , you have a better chance of threading a camel through the eye of a needle than a rich man going to heaven . He had some good ideas , it's just a shame his teachings were twisted to favour the ruling elite . Not much different to this day and age to be honest .
It is and the sooner the rest of the world follows suit the better. I look at news headlines from around the world and see some appalling stories of cruelty, most often they come out of India, it's barbaric, especially the treatment of women. When you look at the history of the world and even the world today, at all the cruelty, famine, war, religious persecution I can only think that if there IS a god he's an evil b***ard and I want no part of him.
