it was ever thus, dark humour usually prevails. Its sad and a great shame,BUT nobody died, therefore can't see the problem tbh

Dark humour! At the end of the day it is just 'stuff'. We should be grateful nobody has died or been injured, especially the firemen charged with saving the building. Yes it is important and a symbol for the French people but far worse has happened..

If it comes to a monument being razed to the ground, regardless of how symbolically important it is considered to be, versus the death of just one person - fireman, security guard or gendarme I would choose the former. Compared to a capsizing ferry,plane crash etc. with accompanying loss of life, which happens fairly regularly, it is inconsequential , well for me at least. It can be rebuilt.

Interesting to compare the response to this event with the one after thousands of homes and livelihoods were destroyed in central Italy ( and hundreds of lives lost) due to the earthquakes and floods in 2016 There were nothing like the outpourings of grief not to mention pledges of money from the wealthy that have been made for this building. Most people affected are still displaced with many living in temporary accommodation, often many miles from where they lived and work(ed) and the rapid allocation of funds from the EU and the Government have still to materialise in many areas. We were lucky as our house was virtually untouched but we know many, many Italians and expats from many countries just locally whose homes are currently designated as 'inagibile' (unfit/unsafe for habitation)

 

Absolutely disgusting. All that money could do so much more elsewhere in the world, so many more worthy causes. Maybe we should start a fundraising page to rebuild the Colosseum, too, while we're at it.
