Now the window has closed, or slammed shut in Jim White speak, how do you rate the efforts of our board in the window? The club brought in three new players, Simoes from FC Utd of Manc, Green from Yeovil and Miller from Boro but loaned to Bradford for the rest of the season. Outgoings were Potts, Moncur and Isgrove on loan. We also lost Winkler and Ganaye. On the plus side we kept the rest of the first team together. For me a bit underwhelming. I'll give it a 4. I was thinking worse, but expectations have definitely been lowered. At least they didn't do anything crazy!
It’s fantastic. We have to consider what Barnsley has been through during the last 14 years - turmoil. Again - some people have very short memories. WE NOW HAVE STABILITY. Building bit by bit. 8/10
A 3rd choice quality back up striker would have done me otherwise I’m quite happy. More concerned about losing Winkler if I’m honest.
7/10. Positives: We kept our key players. Rejected initial paltry bids for stars and retained them, things are definitely changing at Oakwell. Brought in Woodrow on permanent which was a coup and a half. Negatives: No marquee signing, it always piques interest and boosts everyone. Wouldve liked an experienced head as we really do have to learn to play 'streetwise'. That is my only real gripe. I fear another Shrewsbury away type referee show in the next few weeks now, and we absolutely need to keep this unbeaten run going.
5/10 Lost Potts and sent two players to the teams above us in the league which I continue to find odd. Didn't sell our top scorer and best player like 2017 so it's not on that level. Didn't bring in a striker which for me was needed.
we haven't been raped and pillaged liked previous years, yes we have lost 3, but only one of them I would have kept (Potts) but money talks. We were also hoping for a big signing but we are after all a LG 1 club who are not guaranteed a return to the championship ( I think we will go up btw) if someone would have said to me on the 1st that Potts, Moncur and Isgrove will be the only departures I would have taken that everyday, all opinions of course COYR, would give it 7 but on the 1st of jan would have probably have said a 2 based on previous years
5. Kept our best players but can't help we're gambling a little by not adding proven players to the squad for the remaining games. Time will tell whether Jan 19 was good or not!
We’ve lost a first team player, our assistant manager & our chief executive inside of a month. Me & you have different definitions of stability
I'd go 6, just because, apart from Potts we've kept key players. Replacement for Winkler is very important though.
An unthought out '2' from me. Yep, we've kept most of our best players to try to get up but seem only to be taking a punt each way by not ensuring we have near-equivalent replacements in key areas like striker, goalkeeper and right back. It would only have taken a small proportion of the Potts money to bring in a credible third striker and decent second right back, plus maybe a 'keeper on loan. And the wages are clearly there with three of our better earners leaving. I'm half-expecting Pompey to try to kick the sh!te out of us in a few weeks - nobble a couple of key players like Moore and were fecked, leaving it as a three horse race for them, Luton and Sunderland.
I’d say 6. However, if we’re all bringing Winkler and Ganaye into this discussion then surely we have to wait until they have been replaced to properly give a mark? Transfers alone, I don’t think we’ve done too badly. Got rid of one who never plays, one who only does cameos and rejected numerous bids for our better players.
I’m not classing Winkler and Ganaye in these marks as they could’ve been poached from us at any time during the year so they shouldn’t be factored into the transfer window imo, it’s just coincidence they went in January. Outgoings: 7- got rid of deadwood in Isgrove, a player who doesn’t want to be here in Moncur and sold Potts for a decent fee and we’ve moved Brown into his place who seems to be flourishing. Only downside is the teams we offloaded Isgrove and Moncur to. Incomings: 5. Green looks a potentially good buy to me, we needed a winger with pace and directness and we have him there. The lad from FC United I can’t comment on because he’s gone straight into the under 23s same with the Argentinian striker. The Miller buy was a curious one as I believed we could’ve used him on the bench as backup from Moore and Woodrow but if he has a loan obligation to Bradford then we can’t really complain about that. The problem I have is I’m not sure Miller will be championship quality for us next season if we do go up so I think we are playing it safe as a replacement for Moore/Woodrow if we don’t go up.
