Another point about Norway. A friend of mine lives in Norway and actually picks up his passport and leaves the country to do his food shopping as the cost their is ridiculous. That doesn't sound like something we want replicated here.
Murdoch "switched sides" because it was obvious there was an absolute landslide about to happen. Murdoch's shift didn't cause the massive landslide. I think the likelihood are more political parties and more coalitions. There are 16.1m voters who voted to remain. If that is their main priority, they currently have no home. I suspect Labour and Conservative will lose a significant vote at the next GE.
Areas of our train system with very close London links may be able to be profitable under any ownership, but outside that it is a massive struggle.
Fantastic - that means that when they're all brought under national control we can cross-subsidise neglected lines further away from London by using those tasty profits. Everyone's a winner.
They said that about all links till east coast proved otherwise now they saying it’s because it’s london . Truth is they can all be run effectively both financially and commuter friendly
If all these nationalised industries were so crap and unprofitable why were the rich so keen to get their hands on them?
We'll have to agree to disagree on that one Marlon. This country has become so London centric in terms of infrastructure etc, I just can't see public railways working ever again cost effectively. Don't get me wrong, I would be completely in favour of such but I don't think it can be done without massive demands on the public purse. Can you really see a government run system improving things in the North.. No matter which party is in power? It's all about London..
Because it's far easier to run a small concentrated strand than a national network. Plus they have just reaped profits via massive price hikes for travel by train. Public would go beserk if we saw the same increases under a nationalised rail system, hence then putting the reliance on government funding from the public purse..
Yet they are making money in them only the profits aren’t being reinvested they go straight into shareholders pockets . Granted because of neglect by these company’s investment is needed to get them back to scratch but we’d need the Tories not to sell them for s pittance to their mates as soon as they are profutabke again .
So basically the taxpayer paid more taxes to provide these services at an affordable price for all, but the rich paid more tax than the poor so paid more in. Now the public has to pay more for the same (or worse) service and the rich take the profits from it but pay less tax than they did before.
Never voting Tory, but now also refusing to support a Labour party dominated by far left entryists who are actively trying to de-select the most effective MPs they have. Lib Dem would ordinarily be the best available option, but am also disillusioned with their inability to make any progress under Vince Cable (hardly a dynamic leader). Right now, my most likely option would be to spoil a ballot paper in order to be counted in turnout. Green would be an option for a protest vote, but they're unlikely to field a candidate in my constituency.
Quite astonishing on the last election, I contacted all candidates except the BNP to ask what they thought were the key pressure points were for the ward. Green party candidate openly admitted that they didn't know and quoted their national agenda. Vote winner = nope.
