https://www.barnsleychronicle.com/article/cavare-turned-down-international-call-up Class. Can't believe he doesn't get more love for his performances and attitude this year.
He wouldn’t have missed Luton though because with 3 call ups the match would’ve been called off surely?
The cynical side of me wonders if he got a back hander to not go seen as the club would’ve wanted the Sky money
I must say, he's probably the player out of this squad i'd instantly replace. He can be decent, but so often he just gives up tracking back and that puts massive strain on the defence and midfield covering. He can somehow manage to carry the ball a long way, but i'm not always sure that's through skill or just blind luck, and he made far more mistakes than Williams on Saturday, yet Williams was criticised more. I think if we had better right back competition, his place would be in jeopardy. Well done to him for turning down the international call up, much respect. I'd just like him to think more and put in the effort to recover when he's out of position.
Glad he didn’t go. Probably the best full back in the division. His energy and ability are critical to the way we play.
Really? He would be one of the first on team sheet for me.... He's been brilliant this season.... His physical presence and strength bringing the ball out have been part of how well we are doing!
Completely disagree. Full back is one of (if not the) most important positions for us with how we're playing now. No other position has as many responsibilities and I think quite how quickly and how well both Cav and Pinillos have adapted to it has gone largely unnoticed. I accept he makes the odd rash challenge but tactically and effort-wise he's been spot on, imo. He's powerful, gets a good amount of assists, scored an important goal (and should've had more) - I don't know what more people want from him considering the level we're at. Can't forget he's only 23, either.
I think Pinillos has been fantastic, a real surprise and a welcome one. Cavare has energy, gets high up the pitch and for the opportunities he has, i'd say he makes the right decision about 1 in 4. If he can get more intelligent, both in cutting out rash tackles and challenges, and choose the right option more, he could be ok. But when we face better teams, failing to run back with any purpose is likely to be exploited. He's a big lad, strong for sure. But so was Jean Yves M'Voto. The key thing for me is him being arsed to try and get back when he's over committed or made a mess of something. He did it twice v Luton and he did it a couple of times v Plymouth. in the championship he'd be targeted non stop. He might get away with it here, but if we did get promoted, he'd be first name being shipped out for me.
You seriously think Cavare made more mistakes than Williams on Saturday? Williams has a poor game after, by all accounts, an exceptional game against Peterborough. Because we don’t play with out and out wingers we have to push our full backs right up, so when we do lose possession of course he is going to be out of position defensively. I can’t believe the number of people than blame Cavare for this when it’s obviously the way Stendel wants to play. The covering should come from the midfield. I thinks it’s probably true that once or twice he’s looked a bit laboured getting back, but it’s not exactly easy to play the role of winger and full back.
Agree fully. Runs through a few players, stumbling and barging his way through but that’s about it, defensively he’s a liability. It’s as if he’s never played football at times and I’m constantly thinking ‘just don’t do anything silly’.
I think Williams was fairly solid but was trying too hard in giving the penalty away. But Cavare has done this 2 or 3 times already just this season, so we have to be consistent in judging them on that basis. Williams always tried to get back in. I recall Kennedy and Wiseman being slated for not getting back in. Even Eaden back in the day. And I understand fully the workload on the fullbacks. We're asking them to do that, so they have to try. Has to be an irony when many slate Moncur for not running for 90 minutes, or getting a man go, but then don't criticise for Cavare for doing the same. First and foremost, our fullbacks have to try and defend, and if they don't even try and run back, well, how is that right? If he tried to get back in, that's fine. But as it stands, he has a huge amount of improving to do to ever make a step up. I hope he does, just like I hope that of every player who pulls on a red shirt.
I am trying to be but haven't yet managed to be fully convinced by Cavare. He does look powerful at times coming forward, can be a handful but still reminds me of bambi on ice at times where he doesn't ever seem to have the ball fully under control. I'm not saying he's rubbish, far from it, but I don't quite get the adulation at the moment and, at Championship level he'd worry me.
I thought sky payments changed a few seasons back and all get similar fee depending on division rather than each appearance? Sure I read it few seasons ago I could be wrong mind
How on earth has he not had a call up before? Guadeloupe can't have a huge bank of players to choose from!
