I’m partnering up a new corporate client with my business and they need me to set up a SFTP Server so they can have a secure shared folder with me for data transfers. Any advice on the best solution?
To be honest, I've only ever used custom servers, so I'm not the best advice on that one. Anything about setting one up on Linux or using one, I'm there, but I try not to use cloud hosted services. Hopefully someone else has some experience
How big are the files and do you already own the servers? Also, are you talking SSH File Transfer (SFTP) or Secure FTP (FTPS)? Probably the quickest, easiest solution would be to spin up a free tier instance on AWS with an S3 bucket to store the data. Either install an SFTP or FTPS server, or do it as a Secure web page. Restrict access to everyone except you and the third party. You only pay for the data storage used. This might do you. https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B072M8VY8M
I work for a company who produce financial software so we have to be PCI / PADSS compliant with very strict security standards. We use an SFTP server from Cerberus https://www.cerberusftp.com/ to exchange files with our clients. We use the enterprise version but there are other options dependent on your budget. The SFTP server we use is very user friendly and easy to use so I would recommend you check them out.
using sharepoint just for SFTP - thats a sledgehammer to crack a nut if i ever saw one! Maybe easier if you have not got any experience in these things to see if they will host them and you collect with a client like FileZilla which is then just a simple install and a username and password. If they won't do that then maybe the amazon route may be the next easiest as you will struggle to setup a server if you have no previous experience of such things,
So, I've just bought Filezilla Pro for Mac. Its now asking for my host details, I'm assuming I need to now buy a Host programme?
Not really, it can be set up in seconds. Sharepoint online is cheap for 1 seat. Can share with links / passwords or via external accounts. Drop files onto a document library ir download is intuitive (at least in modern sharepoint) Even includes use of mobile app Synch files with onedrive / onedrive for business to make it even simpler and is really well secured Some of the other collaboration features may also br useful for his business
