I've actually seen that happen in a Barnsley match, away at Spotland against Rochdale many years ago. Peter Springett (RIP) was in goal, one of their lads shot into the corner. It rebounded from the stantion into Springett's hands. Quick thinking Springett put the ball down on the 6 yard box and took a quick goal kick, and we played on. The Rochdale lads went ballistic but the game continued. I was right behind it and it was a goal. Springett admitted it afterwards in an interview. Anyone else see it?
Presumably so, and that neither of them picked up on it. And did they think the attacking side were just celebrating to try and "pinch" a goal. At least they still won.
He gave a throw on the far touch line, think the ref and the linesman were arguing who's throw it was.
You I could understand that type of mistake and I've played where that's happened, but in this instance the ball bounced around the net for an age before the defender hoofs it down field, I'm guessing in frustration.
Don’t know what it’s been given for, but looks like the linesman flags reaaaally late! Think you see it go up after about 15 seconds into the video.
I don't think it was, Peter Springett didn't join us until 1975 and the 3-1 defeat was in 1974. I seem to think it was a draw, but not sure. https://www.11v11.com/teams/barnsley/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Rochdale/
I was there, too. Unless my memory's playing up yet again, I thought it was the 0-0 draw in the Spring of 1976.
Yes I think you're right, it was a draw. Peter Springett used all his experience to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat.
I'm glad you've posted that. I was there that day, but over the years I was beginning to think I'd imagined it. It was a long time ago and I've mentioned it to people, but just had blank looks in return.
I know exactly what you mean. Apart from the famous willardisms, it was just about the most bizarre mistake I've ever seen from a ref in one of our games.
As the ball came out a Morton defender booted it into touch in disgust. So in the end the ref gave a throw - to Morton! Didnt even get that right.
I was right behind that Stantion as well but thought we won 2-1. If memory serves me right didn't we swap ends (or chase them out) with the Rochdale fans at half time. One of the things that will always live with me.
