Twice on Saturday he picked up the ball in good area’s on the left hand side & had players running off him, on both occasions he failed to play the pass when it was on. He then held onto the ball jogging backwards with it & instead of switching the play to the right back when the early pass was on he jogged towards the centre circle & then finally played the ball to the right back. On both occasions he got a big cheer as if he’d done something useful but all he’d done was miss two great chances to counter attack & instead wasted precious time when we were trying to get a winner. I know he can occasionally come up with a great goal but he’s so frustrating for the majority of the time.
Moncur’s dribbling ability reminds of Diego Leon as in majority of the time he’ll run around in circles with the ball achieving very little, but on the odd occasion he’ll do something pretty decent. As you say he’s a very frustrating player, however there is talent obviously there he just needs to show it more consistently.
I think he’s a good player at this level and as you say should probably start tonight to rest the likes of potts. He badly flatters to disceive though, runs well with the ball at his feet but it’s always in our half or in the wrong direct or instead of laying the ball off
He’s got plenty of talent and in spells such as Bradford he’s unplayable. It’s just game intelligence he lacks. Whether that can be coached or learnt I don’t know. I’ll trust the coaching team to make that call. He’s still relatively young. He’s the same sort of age Hourihane was when he came to us. Whether he wants it enough is also a major question. One, again, I’ll leave to the coaching team who see and talk to him every day to decide.
I just don’t think he can do the job that our manager places on Potts. You can say it’s because we lack wingers that Potts is on the wing but his high energy and defensive work rate is invaluable in the pressing system we’re playing now. Also at times you see Potts more coming through the middle when we attack and Thiam pushing further forward in almost a 4-3-3. Obviously that only happens on the odd occasion but it’s a good variation to have in our attack. As good as I rate Moncur going forwards I don’t think he’s got it in him defensively or fitness wise to do the same job. If he’s going to come in for anyone it’d have to be Mowatt for me.
To a degree I agree with you but sometimes he is looking to lay the ball off but no one has showed or made themselves available to receive a pass & he has to turn backwards to lay the ball off .
