What are the rules on this? Always thought it only went to the player if the shot was off target?

Think you are getting confused with the 'was it an own goal' rule

So it depends on which team the deflection comes off? Random lack of consistency.

Thats for own goals... how can you have a ruling on if someone intended to shoot or it hit them by accident on the way in? Strikers getting assists would be claiming them all the time.

Clear difference between a deflection and a shot but fair enough.

5x as many world cup goals as Rooney in 2 matches. I hope he smashes his overall record.

He can “steal” as many goals as he likes so long as he keeps getting on the scoresheet and we keep winning.

Thought the ruling was about changing direction,

A stolen goal? It was a lucky deflection but it completely changed direction. It was completely different to the Spurs goal that you're referring to.

Two seasons ago Mallan was credited with a goal after the shot from Moncur destined for the back of the net, brushed passed him. Mallan had no influence on the goal but it was awarded to him.

Given we’ve only had Mallan for one season it must be!

Wayne Biggins once claimed a goal that literally I was closer to ( standing down the front) than he was so I think Mallan not playing for us should be no barrier to him claiming the goal.
