Just been googling the Paul Onuachu guy and he looks a right player. Scored plenty for his club and even scored against Man U in Europe a few seasons back after coming on as a sub as all reports saying he changed game and they could not handle him. Someone like him would cause chaos in League one and even in Championship I am sure
He is also subject to interest from Werder Bremen, but they couldn’t agree a fee. It’s all well and good picking out the best players on football manager, but it’s like suggesting we go and sign Ryan Sessegnon. Yes he’s a very good player. But totally unrealistic. Just because they are foreign doesn’t make them any more realistic.
For me Pinnock is our best centre half he has all the attributes to make it even further up the football league than he has already leaped. Him next to a player at least similar to Arnason would be ideal IMO. 100% about the Scandinavian leagues. The fashionable leagues like Spain, France, Belgium are so heavily scouted it is much harder to find a gem under the radar. It would be a really smart move to scour the nordic nations especially in May, June, July while we are not playing and they are.
Well it is not one I had heard of so was taking the suggestion and taking a look. This one may be unrealistic but I get where the OP is coming from in his post. There is no point aiming for foreign players who have been mediocre in lower leagues overseas as it poses even more of a risk than signing a lower league player from UK. As he pointed out look at what Thiam has achieved for us since joining. Yes there is still time for him to come good but so far he has been pants, he was signed from second tier of France and had a poor record there, but we still paid a decent whack for him. If we are aiming for overseas players then I am all for it to bring some variation to the side and widen our search range but we need to be smarter about who we sign.
I know the website but I very rarely use it. My keen interest in Nordic football is why I suggest these players.
I was not aware of the bid from Bremen but usually I'd think we can attract the top players in the Danish League. Not so long ago QPR were being linked with Onuachu when they were 16th in the championship.
The problem is we are in the market for who is willing to come - the best talent in most leagues are not interested. We signed the best talent in the Austrian League. That’s worked out brilliantly. He’s off back this summer. Every league is scouted now. Clubs have access to up to date scouting databases on every single player in every competitive league at the push of a button. Just looking up players in the football manager database which is what Hemsie does is not really shining a light on anything. And those players listed are probably very good players. Which is why clubs in the top divisions across Europe are looking to sign them. Because we haven’t heard of them doesn’t mean they are more accessible to us and more realistic signings.
QPR wages last year £29.3m. Barnsley wages £9m. And because a club in a higher league, with wages 3 times our own showed an interest a few years back, doesn’t necessarily mean they would want to sign with us.
QPR & Barnsley are not so far apart. We often get linked with the same players. They can offer higher wages granted but if they are in with a shout of getting someone then so are we.
'the best talent in the leagues are not interested'. This is totally untrue. A move to England is a chance to make a name for themselves and get a shot in the premier league. And also just because clubs can access information on players doesn't mean they aren't completely missing the best gems out there. There is probably a player in Slovakia who is brilliant but who would think to look there? It's up to the clubs if they want to think outside the box and actually pursue players in less fashionable footballing nations.
I like this thread some very credible points but I must point out that Aarnason is getting on but more to the point very pedestrian & I think our new style of pressing will require a level of pace he unfortunately lacks
indeed pace is not his forte. League 1 however for the most part is full of clubs who lack the sort of finances to go out and buy the most skillful players. Often this means clubs building squads based around direct football & relying on set pieces so they have a lot of big physical players. This is why I think a player in the ilk of Kari Arnason would be very useful.
You are talking about pinnock like he is a 20 year old , I think he is 25 and not established himself as yet , all be it a decent player he may turn out to be
Jamie Vardy was around his age when he moved from the national league to the championship. Some footballers are simply late bloomers.
In the games he has played he's been outstanding: composed, strong in the air, well timed tackling, good distribution. Scored 2 games in a row with Reading & Sunderland too.
well perhaps it is not so obvious as we spent a million on an 8 goal french 2nd tier striker and are now seemingly happy to let what appears to be a very talented Austrian lad leave without giving him a chance? We know as much about Knasmullner now as we did before he joined but his stats prior to that are second to none. Jose Morais did not favour him and now he's left so it'd be worth a clean slate if the lad was up for it IMO. Stendel & Winkler ought to have the chance to assess if they'd like him in their squad.
