World in Motion - summed up the feeling of that summer perfectly for me. Just turned 20 at uni having a ball - loved it!!
I do remember as far back as '82. I'm also familiar with 'Back Home' from 1970, but the one that I really liked, bizarrely, was Vindaloo by Fat Les/Keith Allen. Just a proper drink beer and shout along type anthem.
Can't beat 3 lions for me.... My first memories of a major international tournament was euro 96 against Scotland tipping my mates nan off the sofa when gazza scored against Scotland jumping round like lunatics singing it's coming home at the top of our lungs.
For some reason I've had Back Home as an earworm the last couple of days. Which is bad news because it was previously Hootie and the Blowfish.
It pains me to say that the Scottish song from '82 (we have a dream) was bloody good. Possibly the best world cup song ever.
Watch channel did a countdown of 47 or 48 football songs the other week, which is worth a watch on catchup. World In Motion, Three Lions, Carnival De Paris, Nesun Dorma and Vindaloo would take some beating for a top five. Some absolute garbage was in the countdown. It had in Hey Baby by DJ Otzi and one summariser had him down as the worse Austrian of all time. That says something when Hitler was from there.
Wait until next season when Bradley Potts starts banging them in and the fans are chanting OLE OLE OLE OLE OLE OLE OLE OLE, BRADLEY POTTS POTTS POTTS
The start of the '98 version of 3 Lions is very pertinent at the minute considering the current England gaffer
Best England shirt - definitely 1982. As for the songs, I didn't expect that pick from a man of your refined musical taste!
The shirt is definitely the best. As for the song pick I think I picked it purely because I have such great memories of '82 rather than for it's musical quality.
Has to be 3 lions for me - but Vindaloo - same tournament was pretty good too. Not many other decent songs so to get two in one tournament was spoiling us a bit
