But McCarthy did great up the right with Hammill. Being dropped was a case of favouritism really with Yiadom coming back from injury at just the wrong time for Jason.
Yes because Kpekawa was so great, Gethin Jones was so great, White never got injured, Yiadom's attitude was glimmering. So glad it is left to the experts
Thing to remember is Williams has been part of a defence that's just been relegated to the 4th division. Is he as good as when he was last with us?
besides, he won the player of the season at LB for another League 1 club!!! Surely that proves he's a top player at this level at the very least.
You’ve just said that George Williams would’ve been your first name on the team sheet following promotion. That, sir, is absolutely mental.
Mccarthy hasn't done anything "great" he's been bang average at best. Not good enough just like majority of others.
He won player of the season for MK. Apparently Lindsay is the best thing since sliced bread for some strange reason.
Why is it? It is common sense. People said Hourihane wouldn't make it at Championship Level. People doubted if Watkins could step up. The only difference with George is that he never had the chance to prove himself due to a very very poor decision by the club.
I don't get this revisionist history of George's contribution - George played in 21 league and play-off games from January 2016 onwards, we won 15, drew 5 and lost just 1, which to me is fcukin phenomenal. We conceded 11, yes, just 11 goals in those 21 games - again absolutely incredible and if we go anywhere near that again next season it'll be fantastic. George had that rare quality for a full-back seen at Oakwell these days in that he could actually defend. Standout moment has to be his performance at Bradford against the league's star winger, Marshall, who he marked and tackled out of the game so effectively that I swear if Marshall had had a white flag to hand he would have hoisted it and given up. They stopped passing to Marshall, so disillusioned were they at how George had absolutely mastered him. Nor was he as shabby going forward as some are insinuating above - he made his name in that FA Cup run for Worcester as an attacking right back, did get forward and put good crosses in in a number of the 21 games mentioned above and scored the seminal last minute winner against Peterborough, but for which visit two to Oakwell South would never have happened. No use crying over stupidly spilt milk two summers ago but I'd welcome him back with open arms now.
You're just allowing your bias to surface again. I love the way you've called Mccarthy "Jason", but you've already had a little dig at Yiadom and just as predictably, Lindsay, amongst others.
HaHa you'll make your mouth say absolutely anything for the sake of argument. If getting dropped has such a mental affect on a player then I'm not sure I'd want them in the squad. Competition is healthy.
We had a settled team going pretty well in midtable after Wednesday away. the toddler tantrums Yiadom coming back was never going to end well.
I was very disappointed that we didn't hang on to Williams. The lad was confident. capable, and ran his blood to water in pretty much every game he played for us. He did more than enough to be given a shot at the next level, but the folks calling the shots didn't see it that way. I'd have him back tomorrow. Chances are that Fryers or Pinillos (or both of them) will be ok in L1, but they're not a patch on Williams.
Thought it was a ridiculous decision at the time. He deserved better after his performances towards the end of the season. It would be nice if we could get him back but tbh I think it's more likely we will make a move for Serena and Venus Williams as a centre back pairing to scare the **** out of those league one forwards.
Fan of Williams & in hindsight I would’ve loved to have kept him but you build a squad based on a budget & if everyone was fit & not sold he would’ve been a distant 4th in the pecking order at full back behind Yiadom, Bree & White. Obviously Bree was sold & White had his injury issues so players like Elder got a game but that’s looking back with hindsight. If Bree isn’t sold Williams might not have played a game all season if he stayed as Bree & Yiadom were excellent. You’ve also got to realise the gaps getting bigger between league one & the championship. More teams that get relegated are coming back up & whilst many promoted sides live off of a bit of momentum they’re back struggling to survive in their 2nd year like ourselves & Burton
