Always a Barnsley fan.In the late 60's he was an admirer of Leeds with Bremner,Lorimer,Clarke etc.But he's not a leeds fan now.I think that kills the myth that Mick supports Leeds.Like some young men he admired Leeds conquering all while Barnsley were in league 4.From a recent press interview.

I’ve honestly never understood why anyone’s at all concerned by who a player, manager, coach or owner actually supports as it rarely if ever makes one bit of difference, particularly at our level.

Heckingbottom’s on record discussing how he grew up hating Leeds and that he’s a Barnsley fan. I don’t think anyone needs reminding of exactly what happened shortly thereafter.

I agree but theres been a lot made of the "fact" that Macca supports Leeds his interview dispels that.

He went to watch both Barnsley & Leeds as a kid. So them claiming him to be a Reds fan are probably right & then claiming him to be a Leeds fan are also probably right.

As barmy as it seems I’ve been told by older folk that this was pretty common back in the day. I’ve heard of fans going to watch Barnsley one week & when we were away going round different local clubs who were at home & supporting them.

Seems barmy nowadays when we all seem to hate Leeds & the Sheffield clubs.

He doesn’t but even if he hated Barnsley he’s the type of manager who’d do a professional job, always has done, even when he was leaving Ipswich he kept his players motivated & they didn’t down tools which tends to happen quite often when it’s known managers are leaving & on paper there’s nothing to play for.

There were special buses running from the bus station to Hillsborough every Saturday they were at home. As a school boy I could get on that bus, pay at the gate, buy a programme, watch the big international stars of the day and still have change from half a crown! That’s about 12 pence in today’s money. If the Reds were away I did this now and then, or watched the reserves in a Central League match. Often got big names playing in those as well.

Didn’t think of that but I suppose money’s made a big difference as well. If you’ve nowt to do & it’s only a couple of quid in at Hillsborough then why not watch a bit of football for little cost? But different when it’s £40+

It was literally pennies to watch football then and with no daily TV coverage there was no other way then to see the big stars that we take for granted these days. I didn’t go near Elland Road though. Must have had SOME standards :)

In the dark old days of the 4th division many went to watch the other local teams
Unfortunately i didnt lol ..some weeks when i couldnt be ar5ed traveling the country watching the reds id either go to see Leeds play, like so many others did in those days ..Tracky use to run buses then again sometimes it would be Wednesday or United or occasionally Huddersfield Like you say in those days it was the only way you got to see the big stars of the day ..in fact i once went to see Huddersfield play Man united...there were that many in the ground the only thing i saw of the first half was Dennis Law walking off the pitch at half time ...when everybody seemed to sit down...second half wasnt that much better ..in fact me and my mate came out as soon as they opened the gates to let folk out well before the match ended ...happy days lol
