Thank God for the House of Lords. Might yet save the country from disaster.

Democracy's a funny old thing. During the coalition the Lib Dems brought forward proposals to modernise the HOL and make it partially elected, but Cameron's lot vetoed that. So the Lords are doing the job they have been kept in place to do. And how remarkable that in the EEA debate yesterday, I think both the government and the opposition whipped against the amendment but it was still passed! As Old Gimmer says, this ,at yet save us from the ruin that brexit will otherwise cause. 'Great new trading relationships' - yet Trump is threatening us with sanctions if he is not supported over the withdrawal from the Iran deal. What a mess! Time we all came to our senses and remained.

I'm all for reform of the HoL, but at the moment it is doing its job as intended. Irrespective of your views of Brexit, every business process and IT system in the country has to be reviewed, and a significant number will need updating (or even replacing), before a fixed deadline (depending on your point of view either next April or the end of the transition). And nobody has a f**king clue what the functional or non-functional requirements of the end-state are.

From a pure execution prospective, it would be extremely unlikely to complete this on time if everything had been agreed before the referendum.

It wont mean anything to you but the house of lords has actually voted to give parliment control over what happens not just a small clique of ministers. I thought thats what you brexiteers wanted?

Is quite ironic that the main supporters of keeping the house of lords in its current form when the cameron-clegg government tried to reform it were none other than Rees Mogg aided by Davis.

Not sure why I am typing this though as the Europe must be ditched at all costs group - which was not the entire 52% that voted to leave are so fanatical that no amount of reasoning will persuade them that there is a possibility that their particular brand of brexit is the only option and it doesnt matter that it will cause huge problems and loss of jobs for the country, or isnt even what the majority of the leave vote actually voted for.

I’d disband the HOL in a heartbeat but as it stands this is the sovereignty you voted to reclaim. Suck it up buttercup.

The HoL are unelected, parasitic elitists who are looking to further their own gravy train. Irrespective of whether you’re leave or remain, they shouldn’t be the ones to pass the final vote on government proceedings. It’s time the HoL was abolished in my view.

Which perhaps needs to be seen alongside your view that we should dump Keiffer Moore!

But they are making sure that Parliament has to vote on the final proceedings. Not Mrs May by herself, not just her cabinet, but the entire Parliament. Taking back sovereignty as Farage and the rest of the lily-livered quitters wanted all along.

The job of the HoL is to vet Parliament and add checks and balances to the political process. That is exactly what it has done, after Parliament has tried to rush through legislation with more holes than a colander full of Edam.

BTW, irrespective of your views on the referendum, the HoL is preventing Mrs May from committing Malpractice in a Public Office, which carries a maximum sentence of life. Her speeches pre-referendum, following by her actions in pursuing hard Brexit can be taken as evidence and when it all goes wrong she (and the rest of her cabinet) could arguable face the music with a long stretch if it all goes wrong (and it will for all manner of practical reasons as mentioned above).
