I think there's a handful of decent players still in the squad - a decent start to a league one team anyway! If we line up next year like this: Walton New RB Jackson Pinnock New LB Isgrove New CM New CM Hammill Moore/ Bradshaw New CF I don't think we'll be a million miles away. I'd keep Potts, plus Lindsay if we can. Mills could be useful given his experience. Could maybe see a case for Fryers or Mccarthy but I'm not convinced by either yet. I'd love to see Hammill stay. Yiadom too, but I think there's no chance with him. There's a bunch of midfielders that may or may not be good enough - I assume the new manager will take a look at Moncur, Mallan, Mowatt, Mcgeehan, Hedges, Knasmullner etc and make his own judgement. Mowatt is the only one of these that I just don't think can cut it - I bet he's a high earner too. Moncur could be a top League 1 player, but still not sure if he really wants it. We need to get rid of the losing mentality too - a few ambitious young players and a couple of experienced heads are necessary. Not sure if there's any academy players ready to step up like last time we went down, but I guess big Victor and Jared Bird are the closest? Big summer ahead - it's actually quite exciting watching a big squad overhaul!
I would expect Mallan to dominate in league 1 and possibly Knasmullner ( if he gets fit, given the original feedback from the fans of his previous club)
That's a pity, I'd have loved to see him kept on in a coaching role, but he can't really be blamed for wanting one last pay day in the sun. He goes with everyone's best wishes, and I'm sure we'll see him back at Oakwell once he hangs up his boots. As for the rest of the retained list - most of them are probably worth a go in League 1, although the squad is quite big. I'd be trying to shift: Moncur, to at least recoup some of what we paid. May not be easy though. Bradshaw - one year left on his contract surely worth around what we paid for him at least, replace him with someone much quicker to play off Moore. Fryers - at his age he's unlikely to improve much I'm assuming that Mills, Yiadom and Townsend are also off. McCarthy and Lindsay will do well I think and have time on their side. Hedges and Pearson also probably worth keeping. Pinnock and Jackson will surely be one of the best central defensive pairings in the league. Central midfield is a bit of a mystery, but one or all of Knasmullner, Mallan and McGeehan could do well. Can't be relying on them though, so it's a key area, along with a pacey striker. Edit - just remembered about Mowatt. High earner, so possibly best just to release him. What a waste of talent.
A few of the players have been saying that. Townsend, Hedges, Isgrove & Jackson all got no time for him according to fans who to spoke to them
I've also heard that Morais was less then popular with a few at Oakwell! Anyway, I'd be happy to see the following line-up come our opening game, providing Hammill leaves and Yiadom also departs. Walton New RB Pinnock Lindsay New LB Isgrove Moncur New CM Hedges/New LW Moore Bradshaw I think that would be a good base to build from, with the likes of Jackson, Potts, Victor Adeboyejo, Knacmullner and Mallan providing extra options. I don't think the squad needs huge surgery to do well next season, it'll be if we return to the Championship we would need a potential overhaul
The truth will come out about Morais. We were as good as down the day he came on board, and within two days he had destroyed any chance we had of building a team spirit/all in it together mentality that a relegation battle calls for. Honestly think this will go down as the most bizarre few months in Barnsley history. Not quite ready to laugh about it yet. But the fact we appointed him in the position we were in is the most inept decision in my time watching us.
It certainly doesn't reflect well on the decision making at the club lookin back. Someone was obviously being too clever for their own good.
Difficult to say, as a bunch of raw 21-23 year olds is very different to a group of 23-25 year olds who have been playing together for a year and are brimming with confidence after gaining 90 points and promotion. I've said it many times on here and I stick by it, that Hourihane, Winnall, Scowen, Robbo, Mawson, Watkins et al would have looked just as disjointed as the current lot had they not had TWO League 1 seasons to bed in, in the case of some of them. They would have been absolutely destroyed in the Championship.
I’ve supported every manager we’ve ever appointed. Probably too much sometimes. We’ve made good and bad appointments. Although I will change one thing about what I said. Appointing Morais was the second worst decision in my time. Not sacking him when it was obvious, including from his own mouth, that he had neither the ability or stomach for the job, was the worst. We should have accepted his resignation when he tried quitting the first time if he did indeed try and tender his resignation and say he had made a mistake taking the job.
I think with 3 or 4 additions we should have more than enough to come straight back up. Priorities are a striker, winger and defensive midfielder.
Having heard it first hand from players yesterday, Morais destroyed morale in the team and the new managers first job is to repair that. There's a decent starting 11 amongst them, I said weeks ago a different manager would get results. Morais was a disastrous decision. The Owners will hopefully realise and learn from it. Walton McCarthy Lindsay Pinnock Pearson Mallan Potts McGeehan Isgrove Bradshaw Moore A capable 11 for League 1 and there will be additions.
Who are the players out of contract ? Yiadom, Townsend (announced as leaving), Mills (same as Townsend), Walton and Hammill ? Have I missed anyone ? TIA
Yes very good point. We recruited a decent League One squad last summer and I suppose one of the few positives about this relegation is that some of them can now properly develop rather than desperately trying to cope with a huge step up too quickly.
No idea what the likes of Mowatt Mcgeehan Hedges Thiam Mallan and Knassmullner will be doing next season. This shows what happens when you have an unbalanced squad.
First job is to recruit a new coach. Then depending on the style of play he wants us to adopt, a decision will be made about any retained list. Regarding Jose's tenure, it was quite clear that the players were not truly "onside". I formed that opinion the minute it was announced that the players had held a meeting without any input from Jose and his coaching team. To me that spells one thing disharmony and TROUBLE. Every successful team I've ever seen have been together and have openly praised their boss. Unfortunately as fans , we quite often failed to understand the points Morais was trying to make and sadly he became repetitive, so it must have been difficult for the players. Makes you wonder with players on 2-3 year contracts and probably knowing that if Jose failed he would be on his bike, some of them didn't exactly bust a gut, or as some on the forum have said, was it just a case of too many players in the squad not being up to Championship standard.? Next season will be very interesting. If we are to be successful we've got to shed this "small time" Club image and start to invest in some quality, with the necessary experience and skill to get us back up into the Championship. Once we are back there, our owners must ensure we never experience the disappointment of the 2017/18 season ever again.
Depends who we get in and how he is wanting us to play and line up ect. Could go 352 with ---------------------Walton --------------jackson pinnock Lindsay Mccarthy----------------------------------------- new player New player-------potts ------------------------------moncur -------------------------moore----bradshaw I'd also keep mcgheen, cavare (if he calms down) mallen isgrove hedges hammill but I think he will go promote victor to the senior team. But like I said depends how the new manager wants to play and who he deems good enough.
Correct. But mentally how would this bunch fare if they got back into the championship knowing they'd already been relegated once? We need to be looking at building a side that's A) capable of getting out of the league and B) pushing on in the championship like last time. I said maybe goig down is what we needed a few months back to rebuild without the pressure of playing big games every week. Walton,Yiadom,McCarthy,Pinnock,Lindsay, Isgrove, Hedges, Moncur, McGeehan, Mallan, Moore and surprisingly Potts are who I'd keep, the rest can go. A good keeper, centre half, left back, holding midfielder, winger and a couple of strikers would be what I'd be looking for although who I haven't a clue. Let's start the Ashley Fletcher rumours again
Davies Walton Pearson McCarthy Pinnock Lindsay Jackson Yiadom (will leave) Mallan Isgrove Hammill Hedges Mcgeehan Moore Bradshaw (But he will leave) Adebayejo Publicly transfer list Potts, Cavare, Pinnillos, Moncur, Fryers, Mowatt, Townsend unless any of them are out of contract and they will leave anyway of course.
