Behind the goal view of that "cross"

The Kop usually only had away fans on it by the early 80s, but we were playing Brighton on a Tuesday night and there simply weren't many Brighton fans who'd made the journey. One of our best performances in my lifetime that game. The Aylott goal understandably gets all the plaudits but for me it's McCarthy's header from the corner that stood out. I was near the front directly in line with the trajectory. It hit the back of the net with more more force than most shots. There's never been a better example of a bullet header.

Aylott only tried the shot from that distance because he'd hurt himself and couldn't run.

 

Not suggesting for one minute that Trev tried to cross to anyone. It was clearly a brilliant shot at goal.

So was Moore's on Saturday. A deliberate and brilliantly executed shot on goal.

 

Ok - one more time. Moore's goal was, for me, a deliberate shot at goal. It was a gamble that had every chance of not coming off but his technique was perfect and he put it well out of the keeper's reach. It was a superb goal. I wish he had come on iFollow to TELL us that he meant it because I think he did.

Aylott's was clearly NOT a fluke and I never suggested it was. Brilliant goal from one of our best ever centre forwards.

 

I remember the game, funnily enough though I always thought he was further out. First time I’ve seen it for 30 odd years.

 

My overriding memory was Macca`s header too.
Nearly broke the back of the net.

 

Everybody does. Some people even think Moore's cross was a shot.

 

It’s all a bit wibble

 

Certainly the hardest I have ever seen a ball headed. If you concentrate on the ball as it hits the net it seems to stay there rather than just sliding to the ground. It was as if there was so much trajectory that it took a while for the netting to come back and deposit the ball on the ground.

 

The last goal I can remember us scoring similar to Moore's at the weekend was by Emil Hallfreddson against Sheff Wed. About 2min in

 

Tom Kennedy at Charlton also, but Half red son is more like it.

 

In today's Mirror the headline is TICKET TO PRIDE.

Jack Walton has said Barnsley are ready for a cup final at a Derby next Sunday following the
win over Brentford which moved the Reds out of the bottom three.
The article goes on to say " Kieffer Moore set the Reds on course for a vital victory when his
speculative effort ( doesn't say cross) flew in off a post.
And Oli McBurnie made the game safe with a close range header after the break. It means Barnsley
can stay clear of relegation if they can win at Pride Park next Sunday."
Walton said " It was all about the result, it was about three points, that's all that matters. We had two
massive games to play and we've won one of them and we've now got to win the other. The fans really
got behind us, they were so loud and that helped us because they were like a 12th man. The lads were
excellent and defended for their lives and we could have won it by more goals. We've never doubted
ourselves and it's in our own hands when we go to Derby. We've got a lot of character in the side and we
believe together as a team. We've put up a performance out there for the fans in our last home game.
We've got one more massive game, one cup final, we can win it. If we do, we stay up. We're confident
we can do the job next Sunday. The Mirror performance ratings for the team out of 10 were:

Our old friend George Williams scored an identical goal for MK Dons a few weeks ago.

 

I once scored from the half way line whilst playing for the tracky..
.the lads from Kendray who we were playing were giving it loads about it being a fluke soon shut them up when 5 minutes later i saw the keeper off his line and let bang from the same identical spot lucky for them the keeper managed some how to get his fingers to it and pushed it on to the bar....shut them up big time ... although on top of that I did score from a direct free kick outside the box....happy days

 

It's a well known fact that Trevor Aylott was stood outside Oakwell Sandwich Shop when he chipped the Brighton 'keeper.

 

"Their manager" not there. "Their" player. Their - meaning belonging to them.

 

Wooooo! I am impressed! Not....

 

But surely if that were true he would have been booked for leaving the field of play without permission.

 

As we all know, the rules were a bit more relaxed in those days. It was the best example of tracking back in the history of our club.

 

Wonder if there is any footage of him wolfing down a massive bacon sandwich from there (for a....ahem....bet)
