Anyone of sound mind, knew yesterday it was the right decision, who in their right mind would want to sit outside in these conditions, absolutely no one you’d have to be a nutter.
It was absolutely the correct decision ,however some people still have a pop at the club , thankfully common sense has prevailed & people do not have to take unnecessary risks to see a football match
Common sense? Unnecessary risk? I don’t agree. It could have gone ahead. I’m not having a pop at the club, it suits them not to play especially with the centre half knocks we’ve got. It also means the Norwich fans don’t have to travel on the mostly single lane A roads through Norfolk and Lincolnshire which have to be fair been hit harder. All cleared and safe mind you. Sky and bbc still saying frozen pitch suggests though to me the situation has been manipulated to suit. I will whinge as it means I can’t now attend the game, which as a season ticket holder is basically setting another £15 or so on fire. If the game ends up being a win all will be forgiven - i’d rather miss a win and then get the points than attend a draw or defeat. Survival means more. But nobody will convince me that they couldn’t have at least made an effort to get the game on. Or that it would have been played had they done that. Another inch of snow overnight changes little. Let’s be honest it could have been played had they chosen to. It’s no more dangerous here than it is at dozens of games that are being played and it wouldn’t have taken that much to sort the pitch and stands. The paths could have been sorted with a couple of dozen or so volunteers, a couple of hours, a few shovels and some grit. They could have given them a bacon butty and comp tickets for the game if they didn’t already have them. And the council could have sorted grove street quick enough, the club will have contacts. Other clubs manage ok. Dem blades and donny have no undersoil heating - but is the situation better in Bolton and Burnley? They’ve only just opened the m62 that way on. Scunny has no undersoil, has had nearly twice the snowfall, the away fans have to come over the m62 which has only just reopened and couldn’t have been assured to have been so. Game on. It’ll be no colder 3-5 this afternoon than it was for hundreds of games in the past, particularly night games in January/February either. And if we are suggesting calling off games because it might be a bit cold for fans - when the temperature isn’t forecast even to be below freezing - then I think we’re being a bit daft. Like I say come ten pm Tuesday week, if we’ve bagged three points, I will be happy as the next man. It will have worked. I am perfectly aware it suits more supporters than it doesn’t, I also think they probably spoke to both clubs and asked them if they wanted to bother to try and play the game and sorted it accordingly. Fair enough I suppose. It isn’t all about me. Doesn’t mean I have to agree or be happy about it though.
common sense and putting selfishness to one side we have a duty of care to our fellow fans. Norwich and surrounding areas are still pretty deadly. It’s a long way and the roads are slow. For that reason alone it’s the right decision.
of course it's the right decision. wonder if there's a temperature below which it becomes unsafe for supporters due to risk of hypothermia?
Like every match thats changed therell be some who were going who now can't - and some who couldnt have gone today who will be able to go on new date. Swings n roundabouts.
Biggest concern these days is Health and Safety and the threat of Public Liability claims. The " authorities" get very "windy" with the potential danger that 12,000 or so people in a relative concentrated area and the threat that alcohol, ice and snow and tribal differences can pose. It's not the state of the pitch that's got the game called off, it's Risk Assessment Spreadsheet syndrome.
But the club did try to get the game on.The pitch is fine, the car parks are fine and surrounding areas are fine. It's been called off for the bigger picture of most of the borough still iced up.
I think you’ve got it a bit backwards there if you think that it’s the fact that people care about people’s health and safety that’s the problem and not the situation you just described.
No we can’t have that, Blunts called theirs off 24 hours earlier and a number of other games are off, but no, Boo Barnsley, rubbish decision.
Yet I’ve just driven all the way from a snow bound Farnham to Wombwell in record time the main roads and motorways are clear and there is hardly any traffic even the side streets in Wombwell are OK. Not saying the wrong decision was made but we could have played I am fairly sure. In the past I have been to games where the roads and paths were much worse
That’s exactly the point. Yes it’s not particularly nice out there but it isn’t dangerous, it’s not a massive risk whatsoever and they could very easily have played it had they chosen to try. The argument about a number of other games being off - well a number of games aren’t off. The fact other games are off doesn’t mean it is right ours is. It doesn’t mean that it was the right decision for all of those games either. To be fair it would likely have been fairer to postpone the games at Burnley, Bolton, Scunthorpe, most places. But they haven’t. But we aren’t allowed to disagree it’s the right decision.
Since when have away fans been considered? It's totally irrelevant what the weather is like in East Anglia. If anyone wanted to risk it, they could have done - the same as we did at Hull on Tuesday. We had the choice to go or stay at home and we chose to go. It's no different to any away day - there's usually a risk even if it's just traveling in the dark. I've driven through snow, ice, fog, heavy rain etc to watch Barnsley but it was entirely my choice. Was the same at Blackpool in our 3rd Division promotion year. 5,000 Barnsley fans risked it then and probably the same number didn't. If the sun had been shining in Barnsley would it have been the right decision? I 'm not saying the game shouldn't be called off if the pitch is unplayable or for "financial reasons" disguised as H&S but away fans should not enter the equation.
I think what people forget is the sheer number of people, of all ages who attend matches. You read on twitter, "well I've managed to get to the shops alright, so why can't a professional football club get a game on". Getting the game on is merely one aspect to consider. I've no idea what Oakwell or the surrounding area looks like, however you've to consider that 12,000+ men, women and children aged between 4 and 94 (probably) will be descending on the exact same place and exactly the same time. I've got all the grace and presence of a wounded gazelle when I run or walk; throw ice and the incline up Bala Street into the mix, and anyone in my immediate orbit is at the risk of my gangly frame and flailing limbs. I called it on Wednesday that the game would be off because it seems the sheer volume of people all attending the same venue would cause a risk in itself, before even considering what the immediate vicinity of Oakwell looks like.
I think hypothermia would have been the biggest "risk" and the likeliest "deadly" outcome. It's only some housing estates and minor roads which are still problematic travel wise. I'm sure it isn't going to stop most people going somewhere today.
