mainly looked at the present bottom 8. I was quite objective in my predictions on the results for the 8, and very worst case scenario for us.. Heres how my final bottom 8 came out 17. Wendies.......... 56 pts 18. Reading........... 51 pts 19. Bolton.............. 47 pts 20. Barnsley.......... 45 pts 21. Hull...................41 pts ( GD) 22. Birmingham.....41 pts (GD) 23. Burton............. 37 pts 24. Sunderland..... 35 pts obviously some teams could suddenly hit a purple patch and that could be way off the mark...lets hope we hit that patch and finish better than that.
Our second to last match is against Leeds United, away. I wonder if we'll be in a situation where, if Hecky & Leeds win, we go down. After weeks of singing "He's one of our own", Hecky puts us in League 1. Nah, it won't happen. Forget I ever said anything. Edit: It's our third to last match, so definitely won't happen!
Be nice if we could make ourselves safe there, or the home game a week later. Will be tough ask to go to Derby on the final day needing a point or three. We seem to get an away game involving a promoted team, or a team pushing for a result to stay up, fairly regularly on the final day? Wigan a couple of times, Newcastle, West Brom, Huddersfield.
And I always think when I first see the fixtures 'oh it won't be too bad, they should be promoted by then so will put a second team out' but it rarely seems to work like that. With that in mind, hopefully Derby will be either be promoted or safely in a play off position.
I have us surviving on 41 points (how optimistic is that!) Hull - 44 points (Gaining 12 points from the rest of the season, 3 wins, 3 draws 7 losses) Barnsley 41 points (Gaining 10 points from the rest of the season, 1 win, 7 draws, 5 losses) Burton 37 points (Gaining 8 points from the rest of the season, 2 wins, 2 draws, 8 losses) Birmingham 37 points (Gaining 7 points from the rest of the season, 1 win, 4 draws, 7 losses) Sunderland 35 points (Gaining 8 points from the rest of the season, 2 wins, 2 draws, 8 losses) Probably pretty optimistic, but hopefully we're the best of a bad bunch!
If we only win one more game this season it's fair to say I can't see us staying up. However, I think we'll win more than that. Tomorrow, Bolton home, Millwall home, Forest away, Blunts home, Norwich home, Brentford home, Preston home are all reasonably winnable fixtures. Win half of them and I think we'll be more or less there. We can't carry on with the same win ratio as we've got so far. Well, if we do, we can't remotely expect to survive.
Home games are a problem for us we have only won one home game since August - and that was the inept Birmingham - we couldnt even avoid defeat to Burton so why do you think we will win any more unless things change I cant see us getting much out of Bunts Brentford and Preston - maybe we might get something from Millwall or Norwich but I am not confident. Really need a win tomorrow (assuming its not snowed off)
Yeah for sure, I was being very conservative with the predictions! Think it was mainly pointing out that the three below us look so poor that even with just one win and a reasonable number of draws we could survive. Realistically we *could* win at least 3 of our remaining home games - they're not awful, but looking out our rivals, their games aren't the worst either. Us Norwich Millwall Bristol City Sheff Utd Bolton Brentford Bolton Preston Villa Birmingham Millwall Wolves Forest Hull Barnsley Millwall Norwich Villa QPR Wednesday Cardiff Burton Brentford Bristol City Middlesboro Hull Derby Bolton Birmingham Middlesboro Hull Ipswich Burton Sheff Utd Fulham Sunderland Villa Preston Wednesday Norwich Burton Wolves
We have a new head coach and a new formation, both of which seem to be far more attack-minded than the majority of games played earlier in the season. I'm going to take Jose on face value and "believe". I believe that on the back of these changes our win ratio will improve and that we will avoid relegation. I'll be looking for some tangible evidence to support my assumptions tomorrow night.
Thought it might give us a better idea if we saw all the remaining fixtures for the Clubs all in threat of the drop re- Sunderland, Burton, Birmingham, Barnsley, Hull, Bolton, Reading and Wednesday. SUNDERLAND. Home- Villa, Preston, Wednesday, Norwich, Bolton, Wolves. Away- Millwall, QPR, Derby, Leeds, Reading, Fulham. BURTON Home- Brentford, Bristol City, Middlesbrough, Hull City, Derby, Bolton. Away- Sheff Utd, Wolves, Cardiff, Birmingham, Sunderland, Preston. BIRMINGHAM Home- Middlesbrough, Hull, Ipswich, Burton, Sheff Utd, Fulham. Away- Forest, Cardiff, Bolton, Bristol City, Wolves, QPR. BARNSLEY. Home-Norwich, Millwall, Bristol City, Sheff Utd, Bolton, Brentford. Away- Hull City, Cardiff, Middlesbrough, Forest, Ipswich, Leeds, Derby. HULL CITY. Home-Barnsley, Millwall, Norwich, Villa, QPR, Wednesday, Cardiff. Away- Ipswich, Birmingham, Wolves, Burton, Bristol City, Brentford. BOLTON WANDERERS. Home-Preston, Villa, Birmingham, Millwall, Wolves, Forest. Away- Reading, Wednesday, Leeds, Derby, Barnsley, Burton. READING. Home- Sheff Utd, Bolton, Leeds, QPR, Preston, Sunderland, Ipswich. Away- Wolves, Norwich, Villa, Fulham, Wednesday, Cardiff. WEDNESDAY. Home- Ipswich, Bolton, Preston, Fulham, Reading, Norwich. Away- Bristol City, Leeds, Sunderland, QPR, Hull, Wolves. Looking at that lot, I feel more optimistic about our run in compared to that of some of our rivals. Reading are going to have to do something at home, as their away programme is horrendous. Wednesday should be OK but it could be very tight for Bolton. For me, Sunderland and Burton looked doomed and the other place could be filled by Birmingham or Hull City. As I've maintained all along, I think our beloved Reds will survive.
Just think we could be level on points with Sheff.Wed come Saturday evening. That would make "Praise or Grumble" interesting.
From those matches I've been generous with most teams as a lot of sides in the mire tend to hit form during the run-in. Bolton 14 Burton 14 Birmingham 10 Barnsley 13 Hull 14 Bolton 12 Reading 13 Sheffield Wednesday 9 That has us surviving in 21st on 44, one ahead of Burton. I guess I'd settle for that, although the nerves would be pretty horrendous! I've put us down for a draw tomorrow, so win and I think we'll almost certainly be fine. If only for the huge boost it'll give us.
11 points with 2 wins, 5 draws and 6 losses gives us 42 points. Hoping that will be enough as we'll need a significant improvement to get anymore (not that that isn't possible).
