Jose Morais: "I am more than a coach; I am a leader." Club News Barnsley Head Coach José Morais is excited for the challenge that lies ahead at Oakwell. Continue reading on the official site...
His English is very very good. Very pleased about that, as by all accounts communication with foreign coaches can be problematic. Leonid Slutsky is a case in point. Great coach, but he only started learning English a year or so ago. This can't have helped, especially when attempting to explain quite nuanced points.
I do not agree. He certainly has all the cliches, but does he he the subtlety to get across a nuanced point to players. I wonder. His answer to the question, "Why Barnsley", also showed a lack of language skills I thought. Simply repeating the phrase, "because it was a challenge and I like a challenge", does not get anywhere near an adequate answer.
What subtleties do you think a football manager needs to get across to players that requires such high levels of language skills? Not sure you need the widest range of vocabulary to let a player know what he expects them to do on a football pitch. Polysyllabic words are probably lost on most our players anyway.
Red Rain I'm a big fan of your posts but your comments seem so negative. It's like you're judging the man before a ball has been kicked.I would agree with the managers comments because when you're in the bottom 3 it is a challenge.
He doesn't know, he just can't cope with his world view of nothing good can possibly happen to Barnsley FC or Barnsley without someone being out to shaft it/us.* The rest is just noise. * Previous owner excepted.
What do you think the truth is? They offered him plenty of money to come? He's come to take the piss and get to a better club?
What if the reason he chose Barnsley was because it was a challenge? Whats he meant to say? 'It's a challenge, but some might not think this is the truth..... ....so lets go with its got Barnsley Metrodome, a lovely pint of ale and the weather ain't as bad as people make out. Oh and my mate Jose is only an hour away"
In reality the answer would be that He’s applied for every job going in the country and this is the first one he’s been offered as a head coach.
I am not one to go with the herd. I am proud to be independent of thought and action, even if that makes me a loner. I prefer to think about things logically and in the past, that has led me to defend Lee Johnson, even though he had lost 9 on the trot. It also led me to question whether Hecky deserved full credit for our two winning trips to Wembley as I preferred to allocate credit fairly, as I saw it, between Lee Johnson, Hecky and Patrick Cryne who had to supplement our income from his own pocket. You may see me as being critical, but I would prefer to ask the questions now rather than go with the herd and have to (possibly) change my mind later. I ask the questions and make my mind up dependent upon the replies. I do not automatically assume things are going to be all right because someone says so, even though you have alarm bells ringing in my head. So, having heard the JM press conference, I have some problems. We were assured that he is multi-lingual, but I found his English lacking in the subtleties necessary to get his points across accurately and in that case I wondered how he was able to do that in his job interview. That makes me ask the question, did he get the appointment because of his interview or because of his record. His answer to the "Why Barnsley" question was terrible. What job in football is not a challenge. We are no different to any other club. The questioner wanted to know why Barnsley was special, what made Barnsley different to all the other clubs in the world, and his answer did not provide that. The final thing that worries me is the all Portuguese coaching staff. If they are talking to another member of the coaching staff are they going to talk in the language that they are most familiar with, or are they going to speak in a language that neither of them is totally comfortable with. I suggest to you that they will speak in Portuguese, in which case the only word that a player will recognise in an over heard conversation is the name of a player, his name or one of his team-mates. Now I ask myself, is that going to be great for team morale and team unity. Finally, I would just like to add that if you want to read me, understand that you are going to be challenged. I do not pretend that I am an easy read, or that you will read what you want to read. I try to be honest and I try to be logical and those two thing often lead me to a different conclusion about the same events.
A coach with a exemplary pedigree raises the profile of the club in Europe welcome to Barnsley Jose .Could be an exciting time ahead.
You're not being rational or thinking independently though, you're being entirely presumptuous. I enjoy your post-match thoughts, though not always agree with them, but you're talking ******** here imo. Anyone who speaks more than one language will tell you that, though you never forget it all, your vocabulary does dwindle if you don't use it very often. I don't know how long he's been back in the country but I'd imagine his English in media interviews (and let's not forget that's what this is, and it's far different to speaking to somebody privately) will greatly improve over the coming weeks. His football vocabulary, so to speak, will be spot on I'm sure. Give the guy a break. He's done fuxk all to deserve praise or criticism yet.
That surely works both ways. Lets be honest, there are scales when it comes to a challenge. For example managing a team like Man City in the Premiership or Wolves in the Championship is far more of a challenge than managing us or Burton. I think its very reasonable for him to say this position is a challenge. That feels a little bit on the presumptuous side. He very may well have been asking that, but he only said 'why Barnsley' if i recall?. This again seems very presumptuous. I work in a company where English is probably the minority language, with many bi-lingual colleagues. However, whenever English speakers are in the conversation (edit: or presence) they always speak English. I'm sure if the coaches intend to talk about any of the players, they would not do this in their presence. Just seems a bit off the mark to state things like this as fact, with no logical reasoning to back it up.
All of that is fair comment. You want to see results before you start to criticise, I want to see results before I praise. I have done no more than to pose a few relevant questions. The proof of the pudding is always in the eating
Time for you to stop over-thinking everything and get a hobby You are not challenging; you are negative' about the new owners and everything they do because you CANNOT compute that some folk outside of your bubble could possibly have decent intentions. You have it fixed in your mind that no one outside of probably the Cryne family could possibly ever do anything altruistic with the club and in addition you fear that these new owners might, just might, make us succesful, which I think you are totally incapable of enjoying. You defending Lee Johnson not for the reasons you state but because his complication of a simple game appealed to your need to appear able to understand something that you think other fans cannot understand. You claim to enjoy debate yet whenever someone shows an alternative point or indeed proves you wrong you don't come back on it, you dissapear. Your final paragrapgh sums you up - condescending nonsense masquerading as intellectualism and it is high time soemone called you out on it. As for the stuff anout talking in Portugeuse between themselves, it is bordering on xenophobia.
