I completely agree but no one is doing that when comparing Mens and Womens salaries in organisations they are just taking a broad approach which makes the companies look much worse than they really are

Worst example of equal pay has to be tennis. Women somehow managed to argue that their pay should match the men's pay but for only 60% of the work

Not that I watch darts or F1 but who’s really that arsed about the walk on girls or the grid girls to the extent where their mere presence is offensive? It’s just bizarre.

The sheer level of ignorance and bigotry in this thread defies belief. I wouldn’t know where to start! I blame Thatcher.

It's quite depressing isn't it? The real question to me is why did they ever have them in the first place? It's just so weird if you imagine a scenario where women had never been used for such a thing and suddenly it became all the rage for random sports to have half naked ladies parading around holding up signs. I have no doubt that the ladies enjoy doing it and don't want it banned, I'm certain I'd have been all for doing it myself when I was younger if I hadn't have been going into teaching but I can see how it is damaging to women that it is expected to the point that people are getting angry about it being taken away. I do half think that a compromise of having men and women doing it is ok but then the whole thing is just weird. (I'm meaning more about the girls at darts and boxing rather than F1 as I don't know what the grid girls do.) Why can't whatever they do be done by anyone of any age or size wearing normal sports or professional clothing?

In F1 they hold the marker for each grid slot. It could be done by anyone, man or woman or even just a metal stand. They also hold umbrellas for drivers (not because the drivers are past but because they're in the car with no hands free) and at the end of the race they form a sort of guard of honour for the top 3 drivers.

Here's an example of a grid girl
    [IMG]

    And a grid boy
    [IMG]

The outfits that grid girls have worn was a bit revealing in the past I think (from photos) but I don't remember ever actually seeing them on TV and noticing it. For me it's not about what they wear or whether they're male or female it just sort of makes the grid slot important when there is a person holding a board with a driver's name on it. With so many mechanics around the cars it can look a bit messy but somebody standing with a big board says this is important.

As for the ones in darts. Totally different ball game and never understood it.

I just think it's a bit sad that fully clothed jobs are being removed in the interests of equality when in actual fact both male and females have and do do the job. I also struggle to see how anyone could be offended by this but accept models in general which is literally nothing more than using your body or looks to sell and yet that is not only widely accepted but encouraged

Thanks for the explanation of what they do :) The job isn't really being removed for that though as they could have easily kept the jobs and just had anyone hold up the sign, it didn't need to be an attractive girl. I can see people's arguments sort of but it's weird being a woman and knowing that page 3 was acceptable and argued for keeping, girls in sports wearing skimpy clothing is/was acceptable and argued for keeping when they are both in really random places. Sure, have porn sites or places people can go to look at whoever they want to but having them in newspapers and at sports matches is just weird, whether the girls liked doing that job or not. Lots of women and kids like watching sports (or reading the newspaper) too and it's a bit strange that lasses are paraded around in next to nothing for men to ogle at - it just has no place in sport nowadays. Imagine if it was common for men to be in skimpy undies at loads of really random places - you open a menu and there's a guy there in some tighty whities, you go to the supermarket and a muscly guy wearing not very much scans your items. Those examples seem weird as they don't exist currently but to me the female examples that do exist are just as weird and out of place. Go to a strip club to see some half naked girls, go to a darts match to see some darts (substitute with any sport). If nothing else, they are alienating half of the population which has got to be bad for business.

In terms of models, I can't see the point in them other than to model clothes so you can see how they would fit. Obviously, that is only useful if they have people of all sizes and there are some good websites where you can select your size and then watch a video of someone walk down a catwalk in that outfit so you can see how the item of clothing hangs and moves around. I don't care what the person looks like though as I'm looking at the clothes.

Totally agree. I don't really understand why you need to have some eye candy that's unrelated to a sport to enjoy the sport. I do understand cheerleaders as they are there to get the crowd going. Don't really understand the outfits though or see how that makes any difference to their performance (other than for flexibility reasons). Grid girls, and to be honest boys, I like for the reasons I gave. I don't see them as sexual in any way. I think that they have been removed because of the girls used in darts and boxing etc and how they sort of fall under the same umbrella. Should have just made it clear that any gender was acceptable and made sure the clothing was normal and not revealing. Would still have done the job in highlighting the places without there really being any sexuality involved.

Now about page 3. What's wrong with that? I always like to hear what Nicole 18 from Kent thinks. I used to get really uncomfortable as a kid because page three usually had the most interesting article on it but it was right next to a half naked woman. As a 8 or 9 year old it used to embarrass me a lot and I'm not even female

I used to hate sitting behind someone on the bus who was reading it (that used to happen strangely regularly) and had it open at that page for ages. Normally an oldish woman who would be reading something else on the page (I think) but I would panic that people would think I was looking so I had to stare in the opposite direction until I hoped enough time had passed. Or when I used to help draw up the fire at my friend's grandparent's house and we had to skip that page without wanting them to know that we knew that page existed. Awkward times.

Yep I've done that where someone else is reading it and you have to deliberately look away and had to quickly skip a page while pretending you hadn't noticed.
I really have no idea why somebody who produced a newspaper thought it was something that would boost sales

It’s only in the UK and Roi darts are banning walk on girls.

Everywhere else on the tour they are still part of the act.

It would appear it’s very much the overly political correct middle class educated ‘feminists’ who are calling for the girls to lose their jobs. Most of whom appear to be hypocrites.

Not the actual girls themselves who’ve almost to a woman kicked off about losing jobs they enjoy.

Just think, all the struggles women have undertaken to be able to be free to Make their own career choices now getting told by women what careers they can do.

I agree the F1 situation is political correctness gone mad.
They should keep 2 or 3 for the front row & make pole dancing a reward for the fastest in qualifying :D

It's just a shame Kimi isn't a bit quicker. I'd love to see him pole dancing as his 'reward'

Poor perverts can’t objectify women what is life coming to. Maybe we should set up pervert aid.

Is this F1 or darts you're talking about?
